The morning sun peeked through the small, curtainless window, scattering golden light across the room. You stirred gently, still wrapped in Newt's scent from his clothes that still draped loosely over you. Groggy, you turned over, a familiar scent hitting your nose. It smelled warm and something indescribably like Newt. You hummed as you buried your head in the pillow that smelled like him and curled up comfortably in the sheets. You stretched slightly, half expecting to feel the weight of Newt's arm draped over you, but the other side of the bed beside you was cold and empty.
Your heart dipped for a brief second, making you sit up in the bed and search your eyes around the room, but then your eyes caught the small note propped neatly on the bedside table. It was undeniably Newt's handwriting.
"Ran to the gardens with Thomas to grab some food. Didn't want to wake you. Be back soon.
- Newt :)"
The smiley face made you roll your eyes fondly. Of course, he added that. You smiled to yourself and sank back into the bed for a moment longer, soaking in the stillness. It was so rare to have mornings like this. Quiet, peaceful, and uninterrupted by chaos. You could hear voices and the sounds of people bustling outside, though. Still wearing his clothes, you pushed off the covers and wandered over to the window. The island was already alive, with the soft morning bustle of islanders and trees swaying in the breeze. But reality settled in fast. As much as you wanted to stay here, draped in the comfort of Newt's loose-fitting clothes and his oh so warm sheets that smelled of him, you couldn't. Everyone was waking up at this point, which meant more eyes to see you. You couldn't have anyone seeing you in Newt's clothes coming out of his room.
And if someone saw you leaving Newt's room, especially like this, you'd never hear the end of it. Your friends weren't exactly subtle when it came to teasing you.
You cracked the door and cautiously poked your head out. No one in sight. With one last glance over your shoulder at Newt's room, you stepped out and made a quiet dash toward your own.
The hallway was still empty, thank goodness.
But the moment you reached your door, your feet skidded to a halt.
Something hung over it, draped over like a gift. You snatched it down, heart leaping into your throat.
Gally's jacket.
Your stomach twisted as your fingers clenched the thick, familiar fabric. The same jacket that had been wrapped around your half-naked body just last night. The same jacket you tried to forget.
Why the hell would it be hanging over your door?
A joke? A warning? A gift?
You hesitated before pushing your door open, jacket still clutched tightly in your hand like evidence of a crime. You stepped inside and looked down at it again.
He must've found it on the ground... but why return it to you? It was his. He didn't owe you anything. In fact, he should've just burned the damn thing and spared you the psychological whiplash. You didn't want to keep holding it, didn't want to think about last night or what had happened. About the confusion, the tension, the way it had felt wrong the moment you stepped away from him.
Thoughts raced in a wild, tangled mess until voices outside your window broke your spiral.
"...bet she's still asleep," Thomas said, his voice cheerful and teasing.
"...told you she's not lazy," Newt countered, followed by the unmistakable rustling of a basket full of fruits and bread.
Your heart stopped.
