Max gets badly hurt and becomes something new

3rd POV

"This doesn't sound right." Max frowned as she listened to the playback of the song she had been writing for Stiles' birthday, but one of the notes sounded off-key to her.

Derek came to her side and looked over her shoulder, "What's wrong?"

"Something sounds off, but I'll figure it out."

"I have no doubt that you won't. I'll be heading out for a bit, so take as long as you need." He gave her a side hug and grabbed his jacket.

Max turned around for a moment, "Stay safe."

Derek chuckled, "I will."

Max went back to her music and picked up her pencil, but her mind wandered off to one unfortunate night.

"What are you talking about?!" Max's mom screamed as her husband was once again throwing things around and taking tight holds around her arm.

He angrily pointed a finger in her face, "I know you've been lying to me."

"I'm not lying."

He backhanded her in the face, causing her to stagger, and Max came to help her stay up, "Dad, please stop it!"

"You mind your business!" He pushed her into the ground, causing Max to hit her head on the floor.

Her mom's eyes widened upon witnessing it, "Max! Max, are you okay?"

Before Max could answer, her dad brought her mom into a chokehold, and with what strength she could muster, she pushed him away and grabbed a knife, "You need to leave."

"I'm not leaving my house!" He responded with a fiery rage evident in his eyes and tone. Without taking a second to think, she plunged the knife all along his torso.

Max watched the scene unfold with tears in her eyes and unable to move as she saw her dad become lifeless, her mom eventually stopped and let out deep breaths before looking at Max with regret, "I'm sorry you had to see that."

She moved over quickly to her mom to wrap her arms around her, to which her mom graciously returned, "It's okay. I understand why you did it."

"No matter what happens, I'll always try to be there for you, okay?" Her loud weeps swept through the room as she held onto Max tighter, "I'm so, so sorry you had to deal with all of this too."

Max didn't reply but rather embraced the last moments she would have with her mom for years to come.

Once her mom was sentenced, she went on to live with Stiles and his dad since they were childhood best friends, then once Scott came along, the three were inseparable.

"Let's get back to work."

Max continued to do the recording the song for a couple of hours, fixing anything that didn't sound right, and once she'd finished she was so eager to have Stiles listen to it but supernatural duties called first.

The honk of a horn sounded, and Max rushed out the door to Stiles' Jeep, "Buckle up." He quickly took off to where they were gonna help Scott, but during that time, things took a rough turn for Max after she was hurt.
