Hades Pov
"No, it can't be. It shouldn't," were the only words I could muster up. Guests gathered around us at the commotion while I just stared at her, frozen in my spot; not again. She removed her hand and there it was, glaring evidence that this girl was my mate. "A second chance mate," I head someone say over the sea of gasps.
The intricate mark on her neck proved it. Just then unparalleled rage surged through every fiber over my being and I zeroed in on the one responsible subconsciously. "What is this?" My voice came out eerily calm, a stark contrast to the ocean of anger inside me.
"Are you ignorant to what happened the last time I was paired with another soul?"
"Do you think I want to go down that road again!" My voice trembled.
"I had nothing to do with this!" Eros shouted back, he must have thought of me as stupid. Who else if not him? Black smoke leaked from underneath me, my body began to shake and the whole room shook along with it. Glass broke and soon enough shards of all shapes and sizes were hovering around that stupid child.
One thought is all i needed to impale him.
"Don't even think about touching my son Hades," Ares who I had no idea was here until now said darkly. Did he really think he could stand against me? Me? fine then, they could go down together.
The shards started moving toward father and son but at the very last moment a shield erected around both of them. "I know you're mad brother but you don't have to be so childish about it," Zeus spoke from somewhere in the crowd.
I looked back at the golden haired princess, all that attraction I felt before now had an explanation but the feeling of revolsion was stronger. My steps echoed throughout the ballroom and as walked to her. Those whiskey eyes looked up at me in awe, confusion and longing. How ironic, they were the same species.
My hand grabbed her chin gently and I felt those damned sparks again, looking deep into her eyes my words visibly shattered her.
"I have no need for a queen or some cheap remake of a mate, I want nothing to do with you; so do yourself a favor and forget this ever happened."
Tears welled up in her eyes immediately as I pulled back, I opened a gate and went back to the one place that could retain my sanity. Home.
The gate opened up in the hall, conveniently right in front of her favorite portrait of us. I stared at our smiling faces, the last time we were together, the last time I was happy. The pain of the last one thousand years blossomed anew and I sunk onto my knees.
I hadn't shed tears in such a long time but now they wouldn't stop falling. I lost track of how long I knelt in front of that portrait, sinking further down into my own misery than I had before.
"Persephone, gods I miss you."
I didn't know how much time had passed before I got up and dragged myself to my bedroom.

The banging on my door had been going on for the past thirty minutes. I had no energy in me to deal with any of my subordinates, especially Thanatos. "Hades I know you can hear me, open the fucking door or I'm knocking it down!" He seethed from the other side. I'd lost count of how many time he said that in the last half hour.
A moment later however my very expensive mahogany door flew off its hinges and in came a very pissed off Thanatos in tow with Cerberus. "Who in their right mind rejects their own mate?" He questions while my loyal dog just stared at me unimpressed.
"I didn't reject her so stop bothering me."
"You basically told her you want nothing to do with her and left; you may not have said the words but it's still the same," he complained, rubbing his temples. A tired sigh came from him and when he looked back at me there was something in his eyes.
"Your own feelings aside, the underworld is falling apart, it needs a queen. You both do, neither one of you can go on like this Hades, and you've been granted a second chance-"
"-don't."
I had somehow moved from my bed and was now toe to toe with him. "I don't need a cheap replacement; no one will ever be good enough." Thanatos stepped back, "do you as you wish your royal highness; I on the other hand am going to see my future queen. Come on Ceb."
"She smells like Persephone, like what she was," the words slipped out, stopping both of them in their tracks. This time it was his turn to get in my face. "And you REJECTED her knowing full well what she is? Has being stuck inside this castle for a thousand years made you stupid?"
"You do realize if anyone just so happens to find out then she's in danger, nekromanteia are practically gods in their own right."
"Relax, she's Varda's daughter and no one in their right mind wants to get on the Fae kingdom's bad side lest they want to end up like the elves."
All he did was give me an unimpressed look and left with my dog.
Talk about loyalty.
