Rossiya pov
"Why the sudden change of heart?" I asked Hades after regaining my composure; he just dropped the mother of all bombshells on me without warning but I couldn't help but think there was an ulterior motive for it. He's been avoiding this specific topic of conversation for weeks and now he wants to formally introduce me to the realm?
Not only that but he wants me to bind myself to the underworld and it's people. Every chosen bride had died because of that damn fruit and I even if I knew that wouldn't be the case for me, it obviously wasn't going to be painless.
"What do you mean 'change of heart'? I just said since you're settled in we can complete the wedding proceedings, unless of of course there's a reason for us not to."
There it is.
As Hades finished speaking, his eyes darted between the three of us, irritation flickered through those midnight pools. I gritted my teeth.
"Yes," I said "as a matter of fact there is."
"I find it strange that after you tried to isolate me in the main palace and then exiled me to the place so many of your chosen brides had died; all of the sudden you want to complete our wedding ceremony six weeks too late."
A chorus of gasps came from the council members. I expected them to be aware of the situation but it seemed to be otherwise. "What are you saying? Have you been living separately from his majesty this entire time?" The man seated across from me spoke up. Good, this was good. I could use this to get out of whatever hole this guy was digging.
After explaining the circumstances of my living two things followed. First, Hades quiet fury was through the roof which I'm guessing was because he didn't expect me to not want to jump into bed with him and second, the council was appalled. One thing I learned about Olympian royals was that even though they were terrifyingly powerful, to some degree they had to answer to the council. They were autonomous and the ones attending today were just dispatched members.
I fought to keep my face expressionless while cackling on the inside.
"Yes, I sent her to live outside the palace but it was for good reason. Rossiya is part fae and we all know how they can't control their blood lust, especially those born from aristocratic families. I was only looking out for my staff and that was why I chose to isolate her until she was accustomed to our way of living."
"What kind of king, what kind of God would I be if I allowed my people to live in the vicinity of immediate danger? If she could attack and give one of my best generals near fatal wounds just for merely speaking out of turn surely she could do worse if her temper went unchecked."
"And as for having a mistress, it's a tail as old as time in every race be it supernatural or mortal. She has nothing to feel so insecure about especially if she has not one, but two lovers of her own." I didn't miss the venom in his voice when he spat out the last word. The audacity of this man.
"So this is what the fuss is about? Your bruised ego?" Ares spoke up before I could even get a word out; Hades only laughed. "Dear nephew, this has nothing to do with my ego but the well-being of my people and her reputation because who will respect a queen they don't know or can't feel?"
This time it was Luc who laughed, it was very different from his normal bubbly laughter. This one was cold, cold enough to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on erect. "And whose fault is that, hm? You talk about the well-being of your people when you put off getting married to her for an entire year despite this place caving in on itself. The council and your older brother had to force you to go through with it."
"You talk about them not respecting a queen they don't know or feel when it was you who abandoned her at the gates the moment she arrived in the underworld. It was you who let that red headed slut insult her along with her brother. You didn't once defend her and when she did it herself you lashed out."
"You might talk all the shit you can about being a good king and wanting to set things right, yet the only reason you want to go on with the rest of the wedding is because you want to sleep with Rossiya, why? To prove a point. You just want to stick your disease ridden manhood in her because she has two people who actually care for her and you can't stand the fact that she's not trailing after you like a lost little puppy. At the end of the day, all your bull about being a good king is just that, absolute shit."
The room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop and that's not exaggerating. While Hades was quite literally fuming, Luc's demeanor was cold and calm; somehow that was scarier.
"As the head of the delegation today I think we as the councils extension can agree on a few things," the man across from me broke the silence, "Hades' actions are appalling to say the least and although a queen having her own lovers is rare, it is not unheard of so we will not say anything on this matter."
"However, the consummation is a key part of the wedding and even if the realm has stabilized to an extent it goes without saying that you both have to perform your duties. Pick a date and contact us."
