Emery's POV

you'd think after years of sitting in a chair, in the same exact office with walls draped in soft pink and yellow, that my nerves would dwindle by now. spoiler alert, they haven't. i sit upright swinging my legs back and forth over the ledge. my fingers fiddle with the strings of my ripped jeans, anxiously awaiting the results.

i mean can they really tell me something i don't already know? the thing about stargardt's disease is that each patient can be drastically different. the only other person i've known with the condition was my grandma and she completely lost her vision by the time i was born. me on the other hand, i had perfect vision my entire childhood. the only real indicator was my eye color; hazel to be exact. my grandma, her mom, and myself all had one thing in common, hazel eyes and stargardt's.

once dr.sterling came in, bea tapped my shoulder, snapping me out my thoughts.

"hi emery," dr.sterling said as she entered the room.

"hey doc'" i responded with a smile, "so what're the charts telling you that i can't?"

she chuckled at that comment.

"they're telling me you've still got your humor, and that you haven't been wearing your shades as much as i'd like you to," she said with raised brows awaiting my swift rebuttal.

"the way i see it doc', no pun intended but i'm losing my vision one way or another, might as well let it go out with some fun!"

"i've told her so many times-" bea said, causing me to send her a look of disapproval.

"trust me i know how stubborn these teens are," doc responded as she playfully swatted my arm.

"listen kid, i know it's not the most ideal solution, but you know how research is for this disease"

"yea i know, poorly funded bs, i'll try to wear the glasses more often if you promise me a dino sticker, receptionists have been getting stingy with me,"

"maybe because you're 19 and still seeing your pediatric opthalmologist," sterling said with a wide smile.

"wow trying to get rid of me so soon?" i replied as we walked to the front together.

"i'm just saying you could switch to our big girl room," she laughed and handed me a dino sticker.

"we'll discuss this when i'm 21!" i said laughing as i walked out the office with bea.

bea, mr.c, and i sat eating dinner when i mentioned going away for spring break which was in two weeks.

"so i've been talking with claudia, and i was planning on making a trip to visit her for spring break," i stated.

"that seems like fun," bea responded and cici nodded in agreement.

"i think that'd be great since you haven't seen her in awhile, you could plan a girls weekend" cici said.

"yea, that'd be nice," i smiled at him.

once dinner was over i cleaned up the kitchen before going upstairs to my room and texting claudia.

Claudia 🧸💗

guess whattt

you can come?

sure can

good bc i already booked your flight lol

claud you didn't have to do that!

ik ik but i was excited
i haven't see you in forever dude

i knowww
trust me, i miss having a big sis around
being the only kid left home gets pretty quiet

i can only imagine

and with that i fell asleep. only a couple hours later having to get up for school. don't get me wrong university of chicago is great, and i'm so grateful i got in but i am in need of a change.

not like a haircut change, something drastic. i mean i only have live in chicago my entire life, it'd be nice to get out a little and explore new things.

i like the sense of adventure and the unknown. i guess that's what inspires my art. you start off with an idea in your head but with a simple thought the final product can look drastically different than from what you envisioned. whether that's for better or worse.

thank you for reading, hope you enjoyed!
