Emery's POV
at 8pm i started getting ready for this party claudia practically forced me to go to. i took a quick shower before planning my outfit. i decided on a pair of light washed baggy jeans, plain white baby tee, with my navy bomber jacket, navy blue dunks, and a small black purse.by the time billie came to pick me up i had just finished doing my makeup and adding small gold accessories.
seconds later there was a small knock at my door, i opened it to see billie.
"need more time?" she asked, i shook my head and followed her to the car.
when we got outside she opened the passenger door to a matte black dodge challenger.
"thank you," i smiled as i got into the car.
"so this is yours?" i asked when she got into the car.
"sure is, this is dragon," she said tapping the steering wheel.
it was silent for the first few minutes before billie asked, "so can i ask you a few questions or would you rather stay mysterious?"
"go ahead," i replied.
"claudia told me you're an artist, what kind?"
"definitely not music if that's what you're asking, i can't hit a note to save my life," i said and billie found that quite amusing.
she studied me as we sat at a red light, "i paint," i explained.
"oh shit that's dope, do you like go to school to learn it or was it just natural?"
"natural, for the most part."
seconds later we pulled in to a driveway of a larger house, there was a few people standing on the lawn while music could be heard booming throughout the house.
billie greeted a few people as we walked in, briefly introducing them to me.
"yo where's zoe?" billie asked a random dude who pointed to the kitchen.
billie looked back at me for a second, "you good?"
i nodded and we squeezed our way through to the kitchen.
"hi dummy," billie said to brown headed girl, hugging her from behind.
"billie! you made it" she squealed before hugging her back.
"i sure did, oh and this is my friend emery," billie said as she pointed towards me. i gave a small wave and smile which was kindly returned.
after a few minutes of zoe and billie talking i decided i'd take a seat on some random couch.
though in my way there i tripped on the leg of a coffee table, as i leaned forward an arm wrapped around my waist, catching me.
"you okay?" billie asked after setting me down.
"yea, just clumsy," i assured her.
"here i got you this," billie said holding out a red cup.
i grabbed it, looking inside suspiciously, "i poured it don't worry, it's just malibu with cranberry juice,"
"you do know i met you like five minutes ago," i exaggerated.
"okay fair, don't drink if you don't wanna," billie told me before disappearing back into the kitchen, i took a few sips.
after a few minutes billie came back, "wanna get outta here?"
"depends, have you drank?" i asked billie who shook her head no, in response.
we made our way to the car, this ride wasn't as awkward. there was comfort in the absence of talking.
Billie's POV
i tapped my fingers to the beat of late night talking as emery lowly sang the lyrics, i glanced over at her, a small smile tugged on my lips.
shortly after i drove into the dirt road and put the car in park.
"where are we?" emery asked as she stepped out the car.
"look over the edge," i told her.
"oh my god, it's so pretty" she said referring to the lit up city that we were seeing from above, "how did you find this place?"
"i've been coming here since i was a kid" i explained.
i sat beside emery, her knees were brought to her chest. "can i ask you something?" i said looking over at her.
"yea."
"besides claudia, what made you come to LA?"
"i guess i just needed a change you know? i mean i lived in chicago my entire life and i adore it but i needed to branch out," she took a breath before finishing, "chicago is also a reminder of the bad things that i wish wouldn't follow me around."
"what bad things, if you don't mind me asking" i replied trying to get her to open up.
"claudia and i aren't biologically related as i'm sure you can tell. our parents were good friends and my parents passed in an accident when i was 10 so claudia's family took me in"
"i'm so sorry for your loss em, what were they like?"
"you know no one has ever asked me that," a sad smile formed on her lips, "they were perfect. my mom was the most beautiful, smart, kind person i've ever met. and my dad was the biggest joker ever. they were the best, showed up to every sports game, art competition, dance recital. you name it, they were there.
"they sound amazing, and i bet they're so proud of all that you've done,"
she leaned into my side, "thank you bil, i really needed to hear that."
i wrapped my arm around her shoulder and we sat there for just a little longer.
