Omniscient POV
2 months laterbillie lie in the bed, groaning at ray of sunlight shining on her face, so early in the morning.
though her complaints quickly ended when she felt the warm arm of her girlfriend, wrap around her waist. immediately making a smile grow along billie's lips.
-
as the end of the summer neared, emery continued to fill her apartment with furniture accenting her unique style, with the help of billie of course.her favorite room in the apartment was her office/art studio.
emery loved the amount of sunlight that came in through her windows in this room, she knew she'd be spending a lot of time in here.
billie and emery sat in a circle, building a coffee table for the living room.
"oh baby, i meant to ask you if you could take me to my doctor's appointment tomorrow. but if you're busy i can take an uber."
"yea i can take you, what time?" billie responded.
"at 2."
"i'll be there."
"okay, thank you."
"don't mention it, mama," billie said before placing a sweet kiss on em's lips.
-
the next daya little bit before 1:15, billie showed up to emery's apartment with some lunch for the two of them. she struggled for a second to unlock the door since her hands were full but she eventually got it.
"emmy, i brought you lunch," billie said loudly, no knowing where in the apartment her girlfriend was.
emery emerged from her office, "hi beautiful," she smiled before peppering billie's face in kisses.
"hi," billie said as her cheeks turned the slightest bit of pink, "i got thai food."
"you're the best," emery smiled.
-
once the two finished their food they arrived at emery's eye doctor.emery looked to billie who hadn't taken off her seatbelt yet, "you coming in?" she asked.
billie seemed surprised by the question, "oh sure, i didn't know if you like wanted privacy or something,
" billie stated."come on then," emery said as she held out her hand waiting for billie to grab.
once again emery sat in a doctors office, anxiously fiddling with her rings. only this time she had more to be nervous about. her results. her new doctor. the unfamiliar room. everything racked her brain.
billie noticed her nervous fiddling and
comfortingly squeezed her thigh, to calm emery down.a tall, dark haired man entered the room seconds later, shaking mine and billie's hand.
"hi emery, i'm dr.keller, it's nice to put a name to the face my colleague is so passionate about." he smiled.
emery smiled in return. "so after looking over your previous scans and results today, i noticed your eyes seem to progress at the same rate."
"yea, dr. sterling was surprised by that too,"
"this means my route with preventative care for you may be a little different, and that's because usually with a condition like yours we would try to preserve sight on both eyes, but ultimately in the eye with better vision."
"so now it's harder to know which would be a better chance?" emery questioned.
"exactly, but that's okay, we'll just monitor you closely and work to preserve complete eyesight."
"okay," emery agreed as billie sat in a chair near the door, listening attentively.
"so i know your last screening before today was a couple months ago," dr.keller stated, "and i have your results from today as well, but before i go over them i wanted to know if you noticed any changes."
"and i know you're probably thinking why are you asking me that, aren't you the doctor?"
emery was thinking that
"but i want you to get familiar with your body. to point things out and record them for our following appointments." dr.keller explained.
"oh um i did notice my peripheral vision is starting to become foggy," emery said as she described to her doctor what things she could and couldn't see.
as billie sat in her chair she wondered what that was like for emery. how she managed to stay so positive knowing something like complete blindness was in her future.
billie subconsciously closed her own eyes. trying to understand what it's like for so many people in the world to hear so much, so many things to see, but they just couldn't. and then she opened them. that was the difference. billie could change what she saw with a simple motion but everyone affected by vision loss couldn't.
when emery's appointment was done she held her hand out for billie to grab. billie took her hand and walked to the car, opening the door for emery.
the ride to the apartment was quiet until emery broke the silence, once the pair sat on the couch.
"what do you wanna know?" emery asked, as if billie's thoughts were plastered on her forehead.
"what do you mean?" billie asked, knowing this could be a sensitive topic for em.
"you've been quiet since my appointment, so what are you thinking about?"
"is it scary- i mean are you scared?" billie asked quietly.
"yes." emery answered, "but more disappointing."
"the best way i can describe it is like walking in a haunted house. you know what you paid for, to get scared. but you don't know when they'll jump out."
"i think you handle this so much better than i ever would," billie replied.
"well there's still so much i have left to do before i lose it. i have so much to paint, so many places to travel, so many faces to take in," she said as she cupped her girlfriend's face, "and one in particular i want to remember forever."
billie couldn't help but grin as her girlfriend left sweet kisses along her jaw.
