Emery's POV
2 weeks later...
awoken by the sound of flight attendants speaking over the intercom, i knew the plane had landed in LA. after getting off the plane i waited near the baggage claim for my luggage to show up on the belt before walking to the pickup lanes.

after a brief call with claudia a white tesla pulled up in front of me. claudia immediately exited the car and ran into my arms with a beaming smile.

"hiiii" we both squealed in excitement at the same time.

after stepping back from claudia's embrace, i noticed a taller, red headed man standing back.

"get over here finneas," i smiled and brought him into a quick hug.

"it's nice to see you again em," he added before taking my bags to the trunk.

claudia and i got into the car, her sitting in the passenger seat.

"oh em, i meant to ask you if there were any precautions we needed to take for your ey-" claudia tried to say but was cut off.

"shhhhh" i whispered, "listen claudia i know you mean well but i'm trying to keep it between me and you, i don't need any other pity."

"and too answer your question, all i have to do is where these glasses when i'm in contact with brighter lights or if it's too sunny," i replied.

"okay," claudia said with a small frown.

claudia may have not liked the fact that she couldn't tell people the whole truth but she understood where i was coming from. she was there from the second i got diagnosed, she's seen first hand how people coddled me for a condition that made me no different at the moment and i hated it.

the truth is as my disease progresses, the more visible it becomes, the more i rely on others, and i absolutely dread that.

after going out to eat with claudia and finneas, we headed back to their house. i went into the guest room and and began unpacking some of the things i'd be using throughout the week. once that was done i went downstairs and found claudia on the couch with her dog peaches.

"where's finn?" i asked as i sat on the couch beside claudia.

"oh he's downstairs with billie, working on a song."

"right, i totally forgot your boyfriend's a musical genius," i smiled.

"so have you met anyone while i've been gone?" claudia smirked.

"you know that's not my thing claud," i replied.

"what's not your thing? actually getting to know people?"

"yes actually, exactly that."

"why not?" she asked.

"because i hate the fact that you can put in so much effort and get so little in return. or that i can let someone know one detail of my life, that shouldn't define me in the first place and they go running," i explained.

"oh em, that's apart of life, they just weren't the person that fits you."

"but that's my point claud, why do i have to wait, why can't i just live. i just want to live and whatever happens, happens, i don't want to have to go searching for something that isn't meant to be."

"that's fair, i just want you to get out there."

"99% of the time that leads to disappointment," i exclaimed.

"you just pulled that statistic out of your bare ass," claudia said and i smirked as i made my way to the kitchen for a drink.

"who's pulling what out of their bare ass?" an unfamiliar voice asked in confusion.

i turned around to a black haired girl coming up the stairs in a backwards cap, with bangs sticking out of the sides, an oversized shirt, and black cargo pants.

the closer she got, the more features i noticed, like her crystal blue eyes, or her ever so light freckles.

"perfect timing," claudia exclaimed as she got up from the couch.

"billie this is my little sister, emery. and emery this is billie, finneas' sister." she sent a small wave which i returned.

"so are we not gonna address the bare ass comment or?" billie asked, causing me to laugh, and receive a smile from her.

"that was just about me trying to get em out the house more," claudia explained.

"oh then she should come with me to zoe's party tomorrow," billie stated.

i immediately started mouthing no but claudia just smiled and said, "she'll be there."

"alright i'll pick you up at 9" billie said as she turned to me.

"great" i said sarcastically, making her chuckle to herself.

after walking billie to the door claudia came back with the biggest smile on her face

"i could actually kill you right now,"

"oh please you'll be fine em, it'll be fun"

"i don't even know her," i said with a strained voice.

"well now you have time to get to know her," claudia winked before walking away.
