Zena's POV

Today was the day and I was nervous as hell. I slept in Yeira's room since I was too afraid to be on my own. She didn't mind and had me use her bed since she doesn't sleep. The only time she'd sleep is if Hana wanted her to.

"What do you think we'll be doing first?"

"No idea." Yeira leaned against the wall.

"I'm nervous."

"I know." Yeira breathed out.

"Can you help me?"

"I don't even know what we're doing, so I don't know if I'll be able to help you." I sadly looked down at her words. "But, I'll try my best." I gave her a smile as she cocked her head to the side.

I did my morning routine and fearfully stared at my sister.

"I don't like these clothes. They're too goth." I complained.

"Were you hoping for pastels?" Yeira rolled her eyes and opened the door.

The two of us walked to the chamber room. Inside sat the vampire council, Maman, and Alec. Hailey and Lexi entered, but stood in the background. The leader of the vampire council, Ebenezer, stood. He spoke in old French, so Yeira telepathically translated for me. We'd be competing in 6 challenges and the winner would be named heir. Yeira spared me a glance before focusing back on the leader.

For the first challenge, Ebenezer held out his hand. A servant arrived with a small cage. I could hear rattling inside, so I knew there was a live animal. I scrunched my nose when the servant placed a white rat on Ebenezer's hand. Ebenezer then held out his other hand to which a servant handed him a small syringe. Ebenezer injected the mouse before handing it to another servant, who zoomed off.

Ebenezer addressed the two of us. Yeira stated that he signaled the first challenge started. Yeira and I were tasked with finding the mouse in the woods. I was dumbfounded because the woods were massive and there were definitely more than one mice out there. Ebenezer claimed that he injected the specific mouse with a parasite that way he knows it's the correct one. He then dismissed us.

"How do we even start?" I approached Hailey.

"I can't really give you hints." She motioned to the leaders staring at her. "All I can say is good luck and use your training."

"Training? Like tracking?" She bit her lip and nodded. Damn, that was Yeira's forte.

I watched Yeira close her eyes and touch the ground. She tilted her head every so often like she was listening to the pattering of feet. Yeira opened her eyes to reveal her vamp face. She smirked and zoomed out the room. Ebenezer taunted me that I better get going. I gulped and sped outside as well.

Unlike Yeira, I had no idea where to begin. I zoomed around the woods in hope of even spotting a mouse. I'd focus on the light ruffles of leaves, but would either come across a centipede or a malnourished squirrel. I huffed and slapped a tree because what was the plan?! How does one go about this?! I wasn't even paying attention to pick up the mouse's scent.

"Do you even know where to begin?" Wind rushed by me.

"No." I groaned.

"Close your eyes." Yeira climbed a tree. "Focus on small sounds. Listen to very light pumping of blood. Listen to sniffing since mice like to do that." She hinted before jumping off and speeding away.

I heeded her advice and focused. I slowed my breathing and blacked out different sounds. My ears picked up the smallest of sniffles. I darted in that direction. I slowed when I spotted Yeira dangling the mouse by the tail.
