For a moment,
a band of thieves in ripped up jeans
got to rule the world.***********
Zoya rang the doorbell of her father's home and waited for someone to open. She avoided the curious gazes of her neighbors.
Ziva opened the door and a huge smile came on her lips. "Aapi," She shrieked and pulled Zoya for a hug.
Zoya wrapped her arms around her youngest sister and heaved a sigh. She might not be very close with Ziva and Zaina, since she left home after marriage and didn't spend much time with them, but she loved them to death.
Zoya stepped inside the home where she had lived almost half of her life, and suddenly felt nostalgic. Looking around the small home, she was reminded of so many childhood memories.
Kausar came out of the kitchen upon hearing voices. And for a second, she was taken aback by Zoya’s appearance. She wasn't the same girl whom she had raised. The Zoya she knew was always wrapped around with a dupatta, and with her head casted down. But the Zoya in front of her looked like an independent woman in her pants-suit.
"Salam, ammi." Zoya smiled at her mother.
Kausar nodded half-heartedly. "I am almost done with making lunch. Freshen up." And she was back in the kitchen.
Kausar's behavior was exactly what Zoya had expected, but she still felt a pinch in her heart.
"Aapi, come." Ziva didn't want Zoya to get upset with their mother, so she pulled her to her bedroom. The house only had two bedrooms, one was for the parents and the other was shared by the sisters.
Zoya entered her old bedroom, and found Zaina and Sehrish on the bed, playing ludo.
"Mama," Sehrish saw her mother and lunged forward. Zoya caught her just in time.
Zaina also stood up and came forward to hug her sister.
"Did you have fun with khala?" Zoya asked her daughter.
"Yes, of course. We played so many games. Right, Sehru?" Zaina said while kissing the child's nose and making her giggle.
Zoya smiled at her daughter bonding with her sisters. Putting Sehrish on the bed, she pulled out a salwaar-suit from her luggage and went to the only bathroom that was in the house. She stripped off her clothes and took a bath. She wasn't used to showering with a bucket and mug anymore since she had a bathtub and shower back in Delhi, and this just made her realize how much she had grown in her life.
