Starting The Year

"Kuroba, open your mouth."

Kaito instantly opened his mouth while feeling confused at the request. He almost choked when Shinichi shoved a steamed bun in. The detective grinned and Kaito coughed before he glared at him.

"Tasty, right? I bit it off a little before giving it to you?"

Kaito blinked and finally noticed Shinichi was blushing a little. Once his thoughts had caught up with what had happened, Kaito also could feel himself blushing a bit. Because... hadn't that meant.. an.. an indirect kiss!

"Kaito-kun, isn't it the time already?"

Agasa-hakase suddenly pulled him from his slight panic. He just stared at him before the kids huffed together.

"Don't tell me you forgot, Kaito-niichan."

Ayumi gave him a ridiculous stare and Kaito took a look at his watch. Another 10 minutes before the new year.... And oh!

"What are you guys— "

"Let's go, Shinichi!"

Kaito cut Shinichi off and went to take his hand before running towards the private spot he had found with the Detective Boys this afternoon.

"Hey, Kuroba! Where are we going?"

"Watching the fireworks."

"Huh? Can't we just watch them where we were just now?"

"No. I found an amazing spot from which I think it would be nicer to watch from!"

"But the others?"

Kaito gave a grin at Shinichi.

"They'll be fine. Besides, I want to watch the fireworks only with you!"

When he saw Shinichi's blushing had spread to his ears, Kaito couldn't help but think how much he had missed this expression.

"We've arrived."

Kaito said while trying to catch his breath. They were not that far from the shrine but also far enough from everyone seeing them. From where they were, they could see everyone walking around at the shrine and lights from many buildings near the shrine. The snow falling slowly from the sky made the sight better.

"It's beautiful."

Shinichi whispered while squeezing Kaito's hand. Kaito blushed a little at the sensation. Seriously, he could feel how small Shinichi's hand was in his hand right now. He then coughed after glancing at his watch.

"Five."

Shinichi turned to look at him with eyes sparkling and Kaito smiled fondly at the sight of his favorite eyes, those he never knew how much he loved.

"Four."

Shinichi said with a smile.

"Three."

"Two."

They turned in front and continued together.

"One."

Pretty large fireworks started to bloom and Kaito watched the people below them start to wish each other new year. He then glanced at Shinichi who was smiling wide.

"Shinichi, happy new year."

Shinichi turned to him with a bright smile and eyes closed.

"Happy new year to you too, Kuroba."

Kaito didn't know what had happened after that but once he regained his consciousness, he realized he was kissing Shinichi.

"S-Sorry."

He pulled away hurriedly and watched Shinichi cover his mouth. Kaito gulped before inhaling a deep breath.

"I love you, Shinichi."

Kaito started and remembered his dreams when Shinichi's eyes widened.

"I know... I kinda... avoided you and I even lied to you these past days. It's just, after the party, I realized my feelings towards you and I started to dream about you rejecting me. Because of those dreams, I was scared to meet you and now, I know that was so stupid of me after seeing you again. I... I'm sorry, so would you–"

"I love you too."

Kaito snapped himself from his mumbling and suddenly Shinichi let out a laugh. It sounded like he was in heaven.

"What?"

He blurted out and Shinichi giggled, face as red as a tomato.

"I said that I love you too, idiot."

Kaito blinked before frowning at the detective.

"But, aren't you mad at me?"

Shinichi shrugged.

"Well, my heart is too weak to not forgive you."

At that, Kaito beamed and pulled out a red rose from his sleeve, consciously unlike before, and gave a big smile at Shinichi.

"Then, would you start your new year with being my boyfriend?"

He watched how Shinichi stared at him with soft eyes before giving him a shy smile. The detective took the rose from him and put it behind his ear.

"Of course, Kuroba."

"Kaito. Call me Kaito, Shinichi."

Shinichi suddenly became bright red again when Kaito whispered that. Kaito looked at Shinichi biting his lips before opening his mouth again.

"Kai..to.. Kaito. Of course, Kaito."

He said hesitantly at first and Kaito couldn't help but laugh. Shinichi pouted.

"What?"

"No, you look so cute and it makes me happy to finally hear you call me by my first name."

Shinichi blinked at him before smiling fondly at him. Kaito felt his heart was going to burst out from his chest.

"Idiot."

And Kaito kissed him again.

After a while, Kaito realized that he never let go of Shinichi's hand that was in his soft grip.
