She sat curled up against the knotted tree, looking much younger than she was. I took my jacket off and draped it over her in an effort to make her comfortable. She shifted only slightly and sighed in her sleep. Turning away, I resumed my position on the stump as lookout. Eric hadn't been gone long, but the shadows around me gave me goosebumps. I suddenly longed for his protective attitude again, but quickly shook my head. I must have been imagining things. I knew I wanted to stop and rest just like Esther, but I was afraid of stopping. I was afraid that something was out there, and I pegged it on my wolf instincts. Actually more like wolf paranoia.

Turning from the trees, I looked to the small fire we'd made. As the flames danced around each other, I felt more and more safe where we were. I didn't realize I'd stuck my hand into the fire until I heard Esther yawn, and was brought back to reality.

I reeled away from the flames, anticipating the horrid burn I was sure to feel, but it never happened. I raised my hand in confusion and wonder, seeing no burns of any sort. Stupidly, I stuck my hand in again, and when I pulled away, I held the flames in my hand. It was mesmerizing, and I was so awed by the light, that I forgot I was on watch.

Suddenly I heard a loud crack and the fire disappeared from my fingers. It must've woken Esther because she was awake and rubbing her eyes. "What was that?" She mumbled.

I stood, feeling my body tighten, wanting to change. "I don't know. Put out the fire"

Esther was quick to stomp out the campfire, and together we watched the forest with wide eyes and shaking hands.

Author's Note:

Hey readers. Sorry for the super long wait between chapters. With school going on, I couldn't find any time to write. But with the long summer break before 11th grade, I've got too much time on my hands, and hope to write a lot more. :) Thanks for your patience and for your interest!
