It took a while but we finally reached my house. It was old barely kept together and looked like it was going to be demolished soon. But hey, it is what it is.
I only wondered if Evelynn would be fine with it, I'm sure she would since she was looking around at the buildings and greenery the entire way here. This was all very new to her.
"Hey, Evelynn."
"Yes?"
"How is it? The outside world?"
"It's better than I've ever imagined."
"That's good to hear!"
"The company is most of the reason though."
"What'd you say Evelynn?"
"Nothing."
I looked at her before I decided to let it go, I didn't hear her but I'm sure it wasn't anything important. Back to what was important though, I had no money. I went to that damn yard in hopes of finding something, heck anything I could sell. Instead, I got nothing, this also means I have nothing to eat. Same with Evelynn. There are two mouths to feed now and looking back I don't think it was a smart idea to take her in. But my parents didn't raise a wuss, I'll figure something out. Somehow.
As I was going to lead Evelynn to the guest room, I heard a knock at the door. Must be the landlord.. fuck. I told Evelynn to hide herself using a sheet and to stay in the room while I went to talk with the landlord. I opened the door and sure enough, it was him.
"Hey brat, got the rent?"
"No... I got unlucky today with my scavenge."
"It's already been delayed once."
"I know... I know... I don't have anything to give though."
"Well, I'll give you a day."
"What! A day? You know I can't find anything in a day! The yard is only open for visitors once a month!"
Not to mention I doubt I can go back there, If the gatekeeper sold me out, I needed to stay far away. Even if he didn't, I need to take precautions.
"Don't matter. I'm already being generous as is. If you don't find a way to pay, I'll make you the payment. I'm sure you'll fetch something."
His yellow grin followed.
I don't know what to do... I can't do anything but listen for now.
"Okay."
"Good, be seeing ya."
He walked away as I shut the door.
I turned around only to be met with Evelynn.
"What's wrong?"
I asked her since she looked dead ahead, not at me but rather through me.
"I heard everything, are you perhaps struggling with something?"
Oh, so she was just worried. I guess that's normal. I can barely take care of myself here, and she being the older of us would find herself more responsible at least... that's what I remember happening.
"Yea... I don't have any money."
"Money?"
Oh right.. she doesn't know how the outside world works, I forgot about that.
"Oh right. Well um, follow me, I have some books from the school I used to go to, it should be enough for you to get a picture of things."
Good thing I kept them, I lead her to the pile of books I kept on the floor near my mattress. I gave her the first one I found to be a general knowledge book. I always liked them, it was cool knowing about things that could happen in this fantastical world, even if you couldn't see it. Though... looking at Evelynn perhaps I was lucky to see her?
"Is something wrong? You're just holding the 'book'"
"My bad, I was just thinking about how many cool and amazing things you can see in the world. I never thought I'd get to experience any of it but, here you are. Guess I'm just happy. I was lucky enough to get to know you after all"
I was a bit embarrassed but it was the truth

.
He gave me a smile I could only describe as pure. Yes, that was the term. Compared to everyone else I saw, he felt so pure. His intentions, his desires, all of it were clear. I thought it was just the humans in the 'yard' as he calls it, that were beings of cruelty and negative emotion. I was wrong, this entire time I felt everything around us as we walked through what he called his 'hometown'.
There was pain and fear that littered the streets along with something, If I believe the term was correct, 'Lust'. It all felt very new and fulfilling, I wanted to indulge myself more in the sensations but this... boy. As some called him, stuck out like a beacon in the dark.
Just being around him made me feel so much better than anything else the world offered me so far.
"Here, take this. It's a bit late, so I'll be sleeping here. Feel free to take whatever book you want. If you want to sleep, I have a spare mattress right over there."
He handed me the book and pointed over to what he was talking about.
I took a seat on the floor as he lay on his mattress. It felt cold but I didn't mind, it was never an issue for me.
I read for a while and it didn't take long before he fell asleep. The 'book' he handed me was very interesting. It was telling of this wide world he described as amazing. I could only see more of what I experienced during my short time outside though. Only sins, some were less than others but it was there. Taking a break from it, I looked back to y/n. He looked... 'adorable', I had only read about it just recently on the topic of animals and dogs but he looked far more 'cute' than any of those creatures.
I got up and went to sit closer to y/n. I looked at his sleeping face. He fascinated me, in soo many different ways. I thought he would betray me and leave me there. I was wrong, he stayed to help and he didn't even ask for a reward. Although, I doubt he knows much about those 'rewards' to begin with. How adorable.
Brushing a few stray hairs from his face, I let him be before I look at the stack of books once again. One, in particular, stood out to me. I went to get it and read its title. 'Life wouldn't be the same without you, Darling.' It had something labelled as 'romance' on the bottom of the cover. I could tell it was never opened seeing as there was a seal of sorts preventing me from opening it. I wonder why? I did want to read it though, so with one run over of my claws, the seal tore.
