I haven't had to do this in a long time, but... I doubt I have much of a choice. I take a deep breath and prepare for another trip to the infamous junkyard. It has a proper name, but I don't care enough to remember it. I nearly lost an arm the last time I was here.

That was a trap I should've seen sooner. In any case, I don't have any other choice but to return. As I walk down the deserted street, I come to a large gate, the area behind it surrounded by massive fences. As I get closer, I notice the gatekeeper. He knows who I am, and I'm lucky enough that he is sympathetic enough to let me pass.

"Going in again y/n?"

"Yea."

"Be wary, because the last time I had to stop what I was doing to get you. I might not be soo caring again."

While it was upsetting to hear, I decided it wasn't worth worrying about. He was already doing enough for me.

"Alright. By the way, thank you once more."

He looks at me for a moment before speaking again.

"Look, kid. I like you, you're a tough nut to crack and you got balls of steel but one day, no matter how tough you are, even a cockroach gets squashed when they meet something big enough. You'd better keep an eye on yourself. You are not the only person who comes here."

I knew he was right. I like to brag about what I can do and how well I can survive, but I know that in the end, I'm nothing in comparison to the real big leagues. Then again, I'm just trying to survive here.

"I know, but I'll keep that in mind. Others... well, I haven't had to deal with them yet. They can't aim for something they're not aware of."

It was true, I had a talent for remaining unnoticed. Many people came here to get valuable items because of the junkyard's reputation and what it could hold. You'd go deeper if you were really strong. Of course, this meant you'd meet others who were just as strong as you. Me though? I stayed on the outer ring. I only needed something I could sell to pay my rent and food. Nothing more and nothing less.

"Right.. then, I won't keep you. Go ahead."

He threw me the keys to the special entryway. You'd normally enter through the gate with a permit or find a way around the enchanted fence. In my case, I was given passage through the tunnel connecting from the gatekeeper watch post to a decent area from the jump. It was yet another benefit I received from pity.

I'd take what I could get.

Okay, I'm here again. It's time to take a look around. Ordinarily, the idea that whatever is shiny is valuable would work if it weren't for the plethora of traps set to keep junkrats like me at bay. But the last time, I was unfortunate enough to be caught in a trap by another rat. He didn't appear to be very pleasant either. Needless to say, I was no longer going to search under that assumption.

"See anything around here pal?"

Shit!

I dashed behind a conveniently placed trash heap. Obscuring myself from their vision. I was short enough that it would work. Such a rookie mistake, Rule number one of junk diving was to always be on the move. Standing in one place will net you trouble sooner or later. But Instead of wasting time on thoughts, I focused on the ones that drew me out of them in the first place.

They were an unruly, even crude, pair, but I digress. They were dressed in rags and appeared to have never heard of a bath since birth. It's a good thing I didn't feel the need to barf just because I was near them.

"Nah same old shit as all ways. Man If it were up to me, I'd make wishes come true."

The taller of the two grumbled as they walked around, and I hoped they wouldn't stay too long.

"Oh? I know exactly why."

The man closest to him, while not as tall, had an imposing figure, especially given that he was what I could only describe as 'plump.'

"For riches and bitches!"

He hollered back to his comrade.

While the other was looking around the trash piles, the tall one began laughing aloud at his own statement. I could only assume he was looking for something valuable. While some may argue that it is better to run while I can, I disagree. I'm nowhere near their physicality, and getting into any kind of fight, even if I'm running, is ridiculous. I've learned that the only sure way to avoid something is to avoid having the confrontation in the first place.

I'm sure my 13-year-old body couldn't take that many blows anyway.

"Huh, now that I think about it. Anyway, I was pretty sure I saw something around here."

Damn, they did see me.

"Whaddya talking about grumpy?"

The plump one seemed to take offence to that.

"Excuse me? When the hell were you allowed to call me that you malnourished stick!"

The retort wasn't taken much better.

"Oh? Well, fuck all then! You've got a short temper, admit it! I've had to deal with your bitchass for the last month and I'm getting fucking tired of it!"

Plumpy wasn't done yet though.

"Me? I'm the issue? If it wasn't for your bastardly stamina we'd have found something to sell last time we came here!"

Well, while they were arguing, I figured now would be the best time to slip by. No need to run though, quietly and out of sight would work given how loud they're being.

"Yeah? Well, whose fault is that? I've barely had enough to eat! Your fatass ate most of our rations! You're the one to blame!"

I was almost past them to a safe hill I could disappear behind, they just needed to keep arguing a bit more.

"Fuck you! I was hungry, I've had enough of you. Fucker!"

I'm glad they kept the commotion going even if I wasn't looking at them. At the very least, I knew I wouldn't be noticed. And if I was lucky enough, the watch guards would catch them anyway. Based on how they were arguing, I'm sure they didn't have a permit. Almost finished, just nee-

The junk pile I was about to leave behind crumbled. I reacted quickly enough to avoid being caught under it, but I couldn't avoid an item that fell on my head during the commotion. My body was pierced by a sharp pain. The sound the item made as it fell was barely audible to me.

"What the fuck Bob! You shoved me into this pile of shit you fuckwit, This was the only good shirt I had!"

I could make out they were still arguing, I only could only properly hear 'shove' but it was enough to piece together what happened. Looking at the item that had fallen on me, I noticed something odd about it. It had a purple tint, but most importantly, it appeared to be valuable. That was enough for me; I only felt a slight shiver as I picked it up and pocketed it.

"Hey, Johnny, Lookie what I found!"

"Well, I'll be, How much do you think he'd go for?"

Were they also slavers? I quickly turned my head back and sure enough, they were talking about me. I made a break for it before they even considered jumping me. Running as fast as my legs would allow, I could hear them catching up behind me.

"Wait, brat! I promise we'll be real nice with ya!"

"What he said! I'm sure someone would give you a nice home, Ain't that what ya want!"

They screamed behind me, and they were getting louder by the second. That also meant they were getting close. I needed to get out of here before they caught me. Looking ahead, I could see that I was getting closer to the deeper parts of the yard. While I had never been here before, I was aware that the more valuable the items, the more guards would be present. All I had to do was catch their attention in some way. I'd figure out how to escape them while they got these two. A gleam caught my eye while I was running

That would do perfectly.
