It took a few minutes before we finally finished climbing the ladder. All the while, I kept wondering about what Micky had said or... at least what I heard. Let it be known Micky was a frequent drunkard and I've been around him enough times to hear him ramble. Most often it would be him saying stuff like this but regardless of that, I doubt he'd be drunk now. Right?
He didn't act like it, hopefully. In any case, he had a penchant for saying things related to what he thought would be the future. If I had to guess what he'd choose as an alternate profession it would probably be a fortune teller, as ridiculous as it may sound. It would certainly match his personality. He'd be happily scamming all day long.
Nevertheless, focusing on the current task. I'd just come out of the hatch we were climbing up. Taking a quick glance at Evelynn, I noticed she wasn't as talkative to me or clingy as she usually was, it was similar to the time when we just met Micky. It made me think that something important happened during the time I was gone to scout. I'd ask, but there were more pressing matters.
Namely, the sheer amount of workers that lurked around on the first level of the compound. We were fortunate enough to have some cover to hide behind. Seeing as how we used the fire escape to climb up, there wasn't anyone near us.
"They're just going to keep increasing the further up we go. It's not going to be good for us Micky."
"Yeah, don't sweat it. This level has something we'll need."
"And that is?"
"You'll see."
With that he moved on ahead, using his hand to gesture us along.
"I swear, that bastard is pushing the limit."
I swore under my breath but amazingly enough, Evelynn took my hand to make me move.
"Evelynn?"
She simply held her remaining hand to her lips in a shushing motion. Looks like I wouldn't get anything cleared up now. Regaining my barrings, Micky slowly lead us further and further towards the opposite side of the level from where we came. While moving, I was able to see the 'cargo' they had lying about. The workers were busy carrying it around. I wasn't able to really tell what it was due to the plastic covering but It looked a lot like some sort of medical units? Odd. I don't recall this place being a medical manufacturer. Then again a lot can happen in a few years.
"Ok. Stay here and be on guard. I'll be right back."
Micky had gotten us to an area in the corner of the level that was fairly dark. It also had a lot of the 'cargo' so it would be a good place to hide in for a while.
"Micky? Where are you going?"
"Just going to get what I wanted from this floor."
With that, he was gone. My brows furrowed in irritation but I'd let it slide. Not like I was going to go chasing him anyway. Deciding it would be better to rest until he came back. I made sure no one was near before I sat down and leaned against some of the cargo. Evelynn stood for a while before doing the same.
She sat right next to me as I thought but she didn't say anything. Looking at her more clearly, it felt like she was thinking about something and was very deep in thought. It would be rude of me to interrupt but I couldn't help myself.
"Evelynn, something wrong?"
She blinked before looking at me.
"No. Just something I was curious about."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Don't worry, it's nothing."
"Ok..."
