I ran as fast as I could, but it was pointless; they were close and I wasn't going to get away by speed.
"We're right behind you, you little fucker! Can't run now!"
I ducked as I felt air pass by, landing atop the trash pile I was running towards. Lying face down.
"Dodged me huh? well doesn't matter. We got you now."
"That's right John. We woulda just caught you real nice and easy but you just had to make it hard for us. I say we mess him up a little, I'm sure they wouldn't mind."
"Looking at him, I doubt the price would go down much either"
That was followed by chuckles. Typical dumbasses, never finished the job early, always found some time to yap about. Now it's time to put my theory to the test.
"I'm sorry! Really! I just don't wanna go there, please! Here take this I found it while I was looking around, It's worth a lot!"
It wasn't difficult to fake the fear because it was mostly true. While I was calm when running, it was primarily due to adrenaline and experience. I've been pursued before and in a similar situation. But there were times when I wasn't so lucky... or rather, we weren't so lucky... Regardless, I point towards the object that caught my attention.
"Well lookie here, an offering. We'll see if it's worth squat, we might leave you if we're kind enough"
The other, whom I assumed was 'John,' just laughed and smiled cruelly at me.
He reached out his hand to take the object, but when he pulled it back, he realised he couldn't. He tried everything, but it was stuck. I threw some metal I found right at John's head and ran again before he or his partner could notice. It wouldn't be long before the guards arrived; those traps keep you there as soon as you touch them and send alarms to nearby guards. You can kiss your hand goodbye if you aren't found within a few minutes.
The longer you hold whatever the object is made of, the faster your hand deteriorates. The last time I saw it, it was a horrible experience, but I felt no remorse for those douchebags. I could only hear an alarm ringing behind me and a scream.
"Fuck! It's one of those traps, John! That fucking brat tricked us! Shit! What do we do?"
"How the hell should I know?"
I thought I was safe after a bit of running. I had no clue where I was going but there was only one way to go from where I lost them. They were blocking the other, and I wasn't about to take another chance. I took a quick look around and noticed it was much darker than when I started. It had to have been an hour, I reasoned. I shivered again. I've never been a fan of the dark; while I wasn't afraid of it, it always made me nervous. The cold was affecting me as well. I didn't have a jacket, and I was cursing myself for not stealing or investing in one while I had money.
As my gaze wandered, I noticed the trash piles that were common on the outer ring began to shrink in size. I understand that this is a junkyard and that the deeper you go, the better the items you find... but why would it all decrease? Is it simply getting rid of the trash and keeping only the valuables? No, it wouldn't make sense, and no one would spend time organising garbage... if the outer ring had such large mounds of trash, surely the closer you get to the origin, the larger the mounds would be even if the trash that was present was reduced. No, this was caused by something else... well, that's not my problem. I just need to get of here.
I saw a path that looked different from the others, in that it appeared to be the most travelled, and I decided to follow it because it would most likely be my ticket out, even if I might run into people. I'd just run away anyway. I rubbed my hands together and kept them close. I used to wonder why this place was so revered. Were all junkyards worth something if you looked hard enough? I assumed this place was just closer to some wealthy organisation or something, but given how many guards were present at all times and how many people attempted to enter, it seemed absurd.
