AARON • POV
Isadore had been taking a concerning amount of time in the bathroom and I was embarrassed to admit that it had taken me much longer than it should have to realise that my boyfriend should've been back by my side at least ten minutes ago.
Uneasiness triggered my heart into a stressed, accelerated tempo.
I wondered briefly if the alcohol had gotten to him and he was being sick, but then cast the thought aside. Isadore had barely drunk - at least in comparison to Oliver and I, and we were still going strong, just a little bit more wild and hyper.
I'd lost Oliver to Leon, his buzz getting the better of him as he flung himself all over the alpha he'd been secretly pining after during their games of cat and mouse at school. It was only then, without his comforting, familiar body weight pressed against mine, that I'd had enough spacial awareness to realise that my gentle giant wasn't back yet.
I pushed my way through the crowds, fighting my way off the densely packed dance floor, peering around inquisitively to catch a glimpse of long, braided hair, light brown skin flushed red with booze and vibrant hazel eyes.
Isadore was tall and broad, there was no way he wouldn't stand out amongst the tables, decorations and my classmates which meant he should, in theory, be easy to find. But as I swung my head back and forth, he was nowhere in sight.
I even checked outside on the patio where most of the teachers chatted animatedly on deck chairs where they could be heard over the pulsing thump of the music, and other students posed for pictures underneath flowered arches beside water features.
Perhaps my anxiety prone alpha had gone looking for fresh air? But Isadore wasn't outside either and my stomach began to twist with sickening concern, a dark feeling that something was wrong, making my throat feel tight.
I'd promised to look after him tonight, damn it! I should've gone with him to the bathroom. I could have strangled myself, feeling guilty and angry for letting Isadore out of my sight when I'd promised to keep him happy and safe by my side for the duration of the evening.
Isadore wasn't a helpless pup, and I wasn't his father. He was capable of looking after himself and I knew that... But he was also more vulnerable than others our age, in an unfamiliar setting he'd never navigated alone before, and of all the people here, as his mate - as his omega - it was my responsibility to make sure he got home just as safely as he'd arrived.
Darting back inside and weaving around oblivious people with ease, I rushed outside of the sweaty, jam-packed hall and back into the lobby, following the signs that lead to the alpha mens room.
To my confused dismay, as I darted up the spiralling staircase on the left, I watched three alphas dash down the staircase on the right, looking haunted and dishevelled, as though they were terrified they were being chased.
"Somebody help!" The alpha at the front began to scream as he launched himself down the last few steps, making the staff at the reception jolt and swivel in their direction towards the disturbance. I recognised him to be one of the boys that made up Landon and Nelson's possy of bullies. "He's fucking crazy! Call the police! An ambulance! He's killing them!"
Oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck!
Panic made me wild with anxiety as I sprinted towards what I now could hear to be snarling and yelling, the unmistakable sound of flesh pummelling flesh, as well as accompanying harder thuds from bodies landing on hard tiles.
One million horrific scenarios went flashing through my brain, making it harder to breathe and the scarred flesh of my mating spot in the junction of my neck began to burn and tighten uncomfortably.
