"How everything must turn to ice."

In the early 1860s, the continent of Antarctica is still almost unknown - a terra incognita at the ends of the earth. The land is harsh and hostile and full of shadow. But something lingers there.

---

The Royal Navy ship, Cocytus, makes her long, dangerous journey south. She is captained by Nathaniel Danby, a hardened explorer who is haunted by his past. He often spends time away from his crew, but his secrets might affect them all.

When sailors start to succumb to a mysterious illness, fears spread about the Cocytus' goal. Something is haunting and stalking them, taking more and more control of the ship the further south they travel.

Henry Mallory is a young woman in disguise onboard the Cocytus. She has vowed to her partner back home that she will give them a good life. But the phantoms and secrets of the Antarctic stand in her way. She is determined to discover the truth.

Antarctica has long been unexplored. Danby and his crew are about to find out that it should remain that way.

Goose's Thoughts:

We're back on the Historical train (or boat) this week with a Historical Horror that is bone-chilling in every way possible.

This is yet another amazing story from and amazing author. Katie's writing is absolutely incredible and I love how atmospheric her writing is throughout the whole of the story. All of her characters work off each other really well and we get an excellent insight into ship life from all possible angles. I also loved how we had Nathaniel Danby's story on one side, and his sister Maria's on the other. It made for some interesting contrasts throughout.

As a historical piece, this story is so detailed that it pulls you right out of the real world and into this on. The amount of research that must have gone into a story like this is insane and I loved following along on the ship and really feeling like I was there with the characters. It all worked so well and I found myself yelling at the screen multiple times throughout.

Katie's writing is something that everyone needs to experience, even if this genre isn't your thing, check it out anyway. She has this way with words that creates a haunting atmosphere throughout the story. Her constant references to ice just drive the point home the more you read.  I'm really excited to see where this story goes in the future!

Thank you for writing such an amazing, atmospheric story, Katie!
