Blurb:

The year is 1895 and Cerise Verns is afraid to leave her house. But when her uncle dies without appointing a new guardian, she must face her fears and venture outside to find one herself.

Lost and afraid in the London streets, no one understands her plight except an eccentric doctor with his own fears to hide. With his kindness, she begins to put her terror aside and appreciate the world in front of her. Guardianless as she is, she must make fast progress or be shunted into the orphanage, a towering building with a terrible connection to her uncle's past, for good.

Goose's Thoughts:

We're on Week 16 and for the first time since Week 4, we're time-travelling in a new Historical Fiction read!

This story is absolutely incredible. Lucy has such an amazing writing style and she manages to capture Cerise's fear from the very beginning of the story. You can really feel the fear radiating off the page with each paragraph and it's clear that a lot of love and care has gone into telling this story. Lucy has really managed to capture the emotion and pain of Cerise's character throughout the few chapters that have been uploaded.

Another thing I love is how well she's captured the time period. There's a constant darkness lingering in the background of the story and the constant call-back to how different things were back then. What I do love, though, is that this story places mental illness in the Victorian era, but doesn't stigmatise it and we see the characters really try to understand Cerise's mind and what led her to be the way she is.

Each character is unique which helps to strength this story even more. Dr Harper and Dr Robinson are perhaps my favourite characters. They try to understand Cerise, despite having limited knowledge on what she's going from, and work with her rather than against her. The friendship between the two of them is also very special and I loved reading the two of them interact.

I would recommend this story ten-times over given the opportunity. The care and attention to detail that has gone into each chapter is obvious from the beginning. Everything from the characters, to the description has been so carefully crafted that it feels like a published book. Even if Historical Fiction, isn't your genre, I would suggest giving this one a go.

I cannot wait to see where these characters go and how the story progresses.

Thank you for writing such an amazing story, Lucy!
