You had always been proud of your love for Boys' Love. Ever since middle school, you had been an avid collector of BL manga, a dedicated fan of niche doujin circles, and an active participant in heated online debates about the best pairings. When you entered the prestigious all-girls high school across from Ayanagi Academy, you found yourself in paradise—surrounded by fellow fujoshi who could discuss tropes and subtext at the drop of a hat.
And then, somehow, against all odds, you landed a boyfriend.
Nayuki Tooru was sweet, kind, and endlessly patient. You often joked that he was like a small animal—always bright-eyed and eager to please. Your friends thought it was hilarious that a hardcore BL fan like you had a real boyfriend, but they also thought Nayuki was adorable. He was supportive of your hobby, and when you shyly admitted it to him on one of your first dates, he had simply laughed and said, "That's so like you, (Y/N)-chan! It's cute."
And that was that.
Or at least, it had been—until Kuga Shuu entered the picture.
It started innocently enough. Nayuki often talked about his friends from Ayanagi, and while you liked them all well enough, there was something about Kuga that caught your attention. Maybe it was his cool and aloof demeanor, the contrast between his sharp words and his obvious care for Nayuki. Maybe it was the way Nayuki always seemed to be looking at him with admiration, how he talked about him so much that it reminded you of a slow-burn trope in the making.
And just like that, your mind made the inevitable leap: Nayuki x Kuga.
You hadn't planned on telling Nayuki at first. It was just a fun little fantasy in your head—until one day, you slipped up.
"You and Kuga-kun would make such a good couple."
Nayuki nearly choked on his drink. "Eh?! (Y/N)-chan, what are you saying?"
You grinned, flipping open your notebook where you'd been doodling chibi versions of them in matching outfits. "Just look at you two! The dynamic is perfect. The soft, sweet one and the tsundere with a heart of gold—classic!"
Nayuki's face turned an alarming shade of red. "B-but Kuga-kun is just my friend! And you're my girlfriend!"
"Yeah, yeah, I know that! It's just fiction, Nayuki. You know, like those buddy stories you like watching!"
He seemed unconvinced, but he let it go, though you noticed him fidgeting more whenever Kuga's name came up.
The real problem came later, when Nayuki's friends caught wind of your... enthusiasm.
"Dude, I don't know if I should be worried or what," Hoshitani muttered one afternoon, eyes flickering toward Nayuki, who was unusually quiet.
"I mean..." Kuga adjusted his glasses. "It's weird, right? That your girlfriend is trying to pair you up with another guy?"
"(Y/N)-chan just really likes stories like that," Nayuki defended, but even he sounded unsure.
"But you're her boyfriend," Tengenji added. "Isn't it kinda... I don't know, disrespectful?"
That thought stuck with Nayuki more than he wanted to admit. He knew you loved him—he had never doubted that—but the way you so passionately gushed about him and Kuga, the way you sketched them together like they were meant to be...
Did you really see him as your boyfriend? Or just another character in your fantasy?
That doubt led to the first real argument you ever had.
"I just don't get it, (Y/N)-chan!" Nayuki finally burst out one evening when you showed him yet another piece of fan art you had made. "Why do you like seeing me with Kuga-kun so much? Doesn't it bother you to imagine me with someone else?"
You blinked, taken aback. "It's not like that, Nayuki. It's just... fun. It's not real."
"But I am real! And Kuga-kun is real! And I feel weird about it!"
Your heart clenched at the frustration in his voice. You had never seen him like this before—usually, Nayuki was all smiles and warmth, but now he looked genuinely upset.
"I'm sorry," you said, voice quieter. "I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. I just... I guess I got carried away."
Nayuki sighed, rubbing his temples. "I don't want to tell you what to like. I love that you're passionate about things. But... I want you to see me as your boyfriend first. Not as a character in some story."
Guilt swelled in your chest. You had never meant to make him feel that way. You reached out, taking his hands in yours. "You are my boyfriend first, Nayuki. Always."
He hesitated, then looked up at you, his usual gentle smile returning. "Then... can you maybe ship someone else instead?"
You laughed, relief flooding through you. "Deal."
And just like that, the balance was restored. Nayuki was still as sweet and understanding as ever, and while you still loved your BL, you made sure never to make him feel second to your ships again. Instead, you found yourself writing more about a certain adorable, soft-hearted boy and his real-life romance with a very lucky girl.
Because, in the end, no story could compare to the one you were living with Nayuki Tooru.
