Dylan, a freshman in college at Gravestone, was sitting on her apartment couch eating cereal, when suddenly she heard a loud rustle come from her window.

"¿Qué demonios?" she muttered.

She set her bowl down and checked the time. 3 a.m.

Stalking towards the window a bit, she saw a small little figure. It made her jump back but when a car drove by and the light shone on the creature, she saw it to be a black cat.

"Oh." she sighed. "Supongo que estaba asustada sin razón." she bent down and began to pet the cat.

It purred up against her touch but out of fright, it jumped back out the window.

The very next night, the same thing happened, but when she turned around, the cat transformed and she saw a tall girl with pitch black skin and dark green eyes. Dylan stopped chewing on her cereal.

The girl sighed. "I knew I'd find you like this." she looked around. "Look, my name is Samuel, I've come to protect you from these things call the Sins and—-"

"I'm an atheist." Dylan said with a mouth full.

Samuel looked flabbergasted. "I—no–I-" she groaned. "That's not what I meant. They're these creatures who want revenge and you're one of the people that can help me stop them."

"You're sure you have the right person?" Dylan asked.

"You're Dylan Wayward, correct?"

Dylan's eyes widened and she slowly nodded her head.

"Then I have the right person." Samuel walked over and shut the window she came through. "Look, we need to leave tonight."

Dylan gave Samuel a confused look. "I have classes tomorrow. I have a final, I can't leave with you wherever you need to go. I need to sleep."

Samuel rolled her eyes, "It's literally three a.m. and you're eating cereal on our couch. You'll be fine." There was a sudden crash outside that caught Samuel's attention and she quickly looked out to see what it was. "Shit, we got to leave now."

"Leave? Where are we going?"

Before Samuel could respond, the two heard a loud crash outside Dylan's apartment door.

Without hesitation, Samuel ran over and grabbed Dylan, shoving them both into a closet just as the front door fell to the ground.

Dylan felt herself pressed up against the wall in the tight-spaced closet and Samuel's hand over her mouth. Samuel went so completely still that Dylan could believe she wasn't breathing for a split second.

Trying to peek out from the covered blinds of the closet, Dylan got a glimpse of a red figure passing by, making her body go tense and her breath sharpen. Samuel's hand shoved harder into Dylan's mouth and she whipped her head at Dylan.

"Find anyone?" a feminine voice asked.

"Nothing, but someone was here. The bowl of cereal is still cold." a silver figure responded, near the coffee table.

"Look, this isn't going to end well. But once it's clear we make a run for it." a voice said in Dylan's head.

Trying to look around confused, she felt Samuel softly tap her ankle.

"Yeah, hi. Like I said, I'm a protector. Your protector. I can read minds and enter them. So listen to me once this night."

Dylan's heart raced more than it was before. "¿Qué carajo está pasando?" she thought.

Samuel began to move her hand slowly away from Dylan's mouth once more and more figures passed by them. Then when the two heard another door open, Samuel swung the closet door open and grabbed Dylan's wrist, running out of the apartment without taking a look back.

Dylan got a look up at her window, seeing a red figure look down at them.
