Chapter 16: Illusion of grandeur

It was night time in Metropolis, and Zee was preparing her makeup for her and her father's show tonight.

Zee: [inhales] Ready, Karen?

Karen: Uh. I... I guess so.

Zee: Let's begin.

Karen: [gasps]

Zee: Foundation. Shade and highlight. Powder.

Karen: [sneezes]

Zee: Blush. Eye shadow. Mascara. Lipstick! Ta-da!

Ash: [eyes sparkle] Wow!

Pikachu: [amazed] PIKA...

Eevee: [amazed] EEVEE...

Karen: Oh. Oh. Um...

Zee: [scoffs] I know what you're thinking, Karen, but I've been performing in front of crowds for years. The secret is to look exaggerated up close, so you look fabulous from afar. Trust me, I've been doing this forever.

Ash: And you continue amaze me, milady!

Pikachu: [agreeing] PIKACHU!

Zee: Oh, Ashykins!

She then boops him on the nose.

Karen: Ooh...

Ribombee: [horrified] RIBOMBOM!

Karen: What's wrong, Ribombee?

Ribombee: [points at her forehead] RIBOM!

Karen looked into the mirror to see that she had a pimple on her forehead!

Karen: [screams] What is that? [nervously] I... Is that a zit?

Ash: A zit?

Pikachu: PIKA?

Karen: Zee, you have to help me.

Zee: Oh. Sweet Karen, please, this is nothing to panic about.

Ash: There isn't?

Karen: I just...

Zee: We all go through changes at a certain point of life.

Ash: It's true! I know what it's like!

Pikachu: [agreeing] PIKACHU!

Lycanroc: [agreeing] LYCANROC!

Zee: Exactly, my dear! Sure, it can be uncomfortable. Confusing, even.

Karen: But I-

Zee: Why, I remember when I first had to deal with something like this...
She then told Karen her entire story of how and her father performed, her gaining her magic abilities and hiding them, thinking her father will think different of her, and then finally seeing them, becoming proud of her new gained ability, and the performance at Abracadabrapalooza.

She was now dressed in fancy pink assistant outfit, making Ash blush madly.

Zee: It was that performance at Abracadabrapalooza that brought us here today. There was a booking agent in the crowd who got us our first tour. From there we traveled the country steadily improving our act, and that led to this residency at the casino. We never could have done any of it if not for that show. So you see, Karen, the secret is to embrace these changes when they come. They might seem strange at first, but oftentimes change can be a very good thing.

Karen: So... can I borrow your makeup or not?

Zee: [groans]

Ash: [blushes hard] I-I-I...

Zee: Fine!

Ash: [blushes hard] Uh...

Zee: You may want to turn around, Ashykins!
