4. Hexside?

I've been staying at the Owl House for a few months now, Eda said I was welcome to stay permanently if I liked, so I was in no rush to leave.

By now, Luz had started going to Hexside with Willow and Gus. I originally thought that humans were unable to perform magic, but Luz showed me what glyphs are and how they had been able to use and combine them. Written spells rather than drawn from energy. It fascinated me.

Luz taught me how to turn invisible in case I needed to escape the emperors coven in a tight situation. I thanked her, being amazed at the new form of magic- even if I already knew how to turn myself invisible.

While staying with Eda, I've been shown more potion magic. Eda was very crafty with her work but was often missing a few ingredients. I also got into the potion making after being enlightened to Eda's curse and how she gained the name The Owl Lady. She had been cursed to turn into the beast as it drained her magic, and she had been taking elixirs to keep it at bay.

"Dangit, I'm low on elixir again! [y/n] can you go to the market to grab elixir while I go and run some other erands?"

"Sure." I grab my palisman and head out, leaving quick to avoid Hooty talking about literally anything. I mount the staff and fly towards the market.

I land a little bit further than the market to attract less attention and out of courtesy to other market wanderers. I keep my palisman in staff form, keeping a grip on them for safety. I make a few turns, avoiding eye contact and keeping to myself. After a short work I find myself at a window, I knock on it and wait patiently.

"Hey Morton." I say as the window shutter opens.

"[y/n] what can I do for you?"

"I'm here to pick up Eda's elixir. Could I get a bag to carry it in actually?"

"Coming right out." Morton drops down to pick something up, when he stood he placed a sack on the table.

"Thanks." I grab it looking in as if to count them and double check. Feeling confident I tied the sack up and bumped into someone as I walked.

"Oh- sorry!" I look up to see a golden mask and white cloak. "I take back my apology-"

"I'm going to escort you to the emperors coven now." He puts his hand out, as if he expects me to take it. I look around seeing he's alone.

"Yeah... no."

And just like that another chase was underway.

"I'm tired of running from you and your little scout crew you know!" I call out as I made a sharp turn, I had to be careful with his movements. Last time we had a chase through Bonesborough he made an illusion of himself getting hurt to have the upper hand to attack.

I didn't have a plan, I couldn't outrun him and I wasn't the best at outsmarting Goldie either. So I had two choices;

Get caught or don't.

"You- you are very..." I heard the Guard talking.

"Beautiful? Ingenius? Immensely talented?"

"Dangerous."

I had been so wrapped up in my thoughts and our banter that I hadn't realised that my palisman had steered us away from town and into the woods back towards the Owl House. My eyes widen, I can't lead him right to Eda. I squinted my eyes seeing that Eda's window was open, I looked back to my side seeing the sack of elixirs. I gripped the sack tightly, my knuckles turning white at the action.

Taking a deep breath I threw the elixir towards the window, praying that the glass bottles would be fine. Once i had let go of the bag I made a 180 degree turn, flying back towards the town and away from the owl house.

I lean forward and grip my staff tightly, eager to try and speed away. Alas, Goldie uses his teleportation magic to appear beside me.

"You can't outrun me."

I stay silent, focusing on the course ahead, I knew he was right. But there was one place which neither of us knew very well and would be harder to cut me off.

Hexside.

I blast through the doors, flying down the halls. I wizzed pass a group of teens, one of which I recognised as Amity- the girl that Luz was determined to befriend. I found myself going around in circles, effectively getting Goldie to predict the next turn.

Rather than turning left I took a quick right and made my way out.

"That was a nice try. Really cute tactic, child's play even."

"Ahh- well I tried. I'm going to make my real escape now. Love you, toodles!" I teased as I made a mad dash flight back towards the entrance.

"come back here, and say that again..."

I placed the invisible glyph that Luz taught me on my chest and pulled aside, hiding in the bushes next to the entrance of Hexside. I stayed still, remaining invisible, as Goldie flew out of the school and approached bonesborough. I let out a breath and gasped for air once he was too far away. I removed myself from the bushes, relieved that Luz taught me that glyph spell.

Once I finished catching my breath, I remember what Goldie said back in Hexside when I jokingly said 'love you.'

"...say it again"

I felt my hands go clammy as i shifted my weight from each foot. What was happening to me?
