More than two weeks passed and I started to get to know more and more people in school. One person though, made sure he never even walked pass me. And there was not a thing that I could do about it. I had learned the hard way to learn to live with my emotions, no matter how hurtful they were. But...thanks to past experience I was now something like a pro at hiding my true feelings. God, I was such a loser.
As I walked to my locker, humming a tuneless melody softly, Jewel ran up to me, her face bright. "He spoke to me!"
I frowned, completely baffled. "Who?"
She jumped a few times like a little child, which really didn't suit her model-like looks. I was expecting her to start clapping any moment. "Him!"
I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from bursting out laughing as it dawned on me. "Devon?"
Jewel leaned against a locker and grinned at me. "Mhmm."
"Wow, what'd he say?" I asked, genuinely interested.
"Well," she rolled her hazel eyes dramatically, "first he said hi to me."
"Wow! You have to be kiddin' me!" I said with dripping sarcasm and chuckled.
She punched my arm lightly as she laughed. "Shut up! Then he asked me how I was doing in this science project we're doing."
"Yeah?" I asked for more, hoping there was something more to this story.
"Well, then I told him and he smiled so...Oh, I don't even have a word to describe how amazing his smile is! It was that good."
I laughed lightly. "It's great to see you guys making a little process. I mean the chemistry between you two is like, unbearable," I smiled as we started walking to the gym with our bags.
"Are you serious?" Jewel's eyes were wide.
"Well, I noticed on the first day I came here, right?" I pushed away a stray lock of my hair behind my ear.
Jewel licked her upper lip as she thought. "You did, didn't you?" she said, her eyes bright once again with the excitement of something hopeful.
"Oh, for God's sake!" I turned to her and sent her a not-so-deadly glare.
"Fine! Okay, you did notice, but it's not my fault that he hasn't asked me out yet." She ran a hand through her long, blonde hair and sighed, looking slightly like she wanted to scream in pent up frustration.
I stopped walking and looked at her with wide eyes. I had to blink a few times before I could speak again. "Why don't you ask him out?" I asked.
Jewel's eyes widened to mirror my previous expression. "I am strictly against asking a guy out. Even if my love is killing me softly." She giggled for having quoted the song.
I thought of some of the guys I had asked out, who had all accepted of course and grinned. "What's so bad about asking a guy out? In a way, it gives you the upper hand."
Jewel nudged me to walk. "I can't do that! I don't wanna be rejected!"
"Jewel! You're such a goody! How can you get anywhere if you don't take any risks? What's the point in life if you never do something silly or risky?"
She watched me carefully as she walked. "You take risks?"
I laughed and remembered the little race that I had gotten into when a guy had dared me to at the traffic lights yesterday. And my Mini had won. Ah, the feeling of triumph! "Yeah...it's fun."
Jewel did her famous eye-roll again and snorted. "Fun my as-" She stopped talking suddenly and smiled brightly when she saw Devon walking towards us.
