I jolted off the bed faster than I could blink and glared at Jayden before I turned my eyes back to Mrs Wilde. She had her hands on her hips and was leaning slightly against the door frame. Her expression looked stern and I shifted from one foot to the other uncomfortably. I could never get myself to like her; it was because she never tried to like me. Don't they say feelings were mutual? I mentally shrugged. Who cared if she liked me? I was dating her son, not her.

"Good afternoon, Mrs Wilde," I managed with a bright smile.

She looked at me briefly, baring her teeth, which I thought she considered as a smile. "Hello." And that was it. Her eyes moved to Jayden and she ignored my existence. "Jayden...you and I need to speak."

Jayden ran his hand through his hair and left it dishevelled. "Mum, there's something called 'knocking on a door before entering'. Have you heard of it?"

Mrs Wilde's eyes widened as her skin colour went a few shades darker than what would be considered normal. "You're embarrassing yourself in front of your lady friend. And I didknock."

Jayden grinned at me. "Oh, she's not anyone. She's used to me...us. You see-" But he couldn't finish off his sentence as his mother interrupted impatiently.

"What do you mean?" Mrs Wilde's eyes darted towards me again, and kept contact this time.

"Mum, this is Chyna Cunning. Chyna, Alice. You remember mum," he said with a secret smile which I understood only too well.

Alice's eyes widened as she stared at me for a few horrifying minutes. Then her expression hardened even more. "Chyna...as in Chyna?"

"You've not changed at all Mrs Wilde. Just the same as you were four years ago." Maybe I could have made my tone softer or smiled a little more genuinely, but I couldn't. This woman had been hell on me years ago just because I hadn't looked perfect.

Her eyes widened and her mouth opened and closed like a fish a couple of times. "Oh, my God. I must be dreaming. You...you're back? Why?"

I nodded happily. "Yes. I've been back for quite some time now. We came because my step-dad was transferred to this hospital. You know the one? The rich one with world-wide known doctors."

She looked a little faint. "Dear Lord. You just came back and you're already in my boy's bed?"

I tried not to show my discomfort. "Err...well how can I resist?" I laughed nervously.

I guess it wasn't the right path to go down as she ran a hand through her jaw length hair and stomped her foot in anger. "What-Dear God-What have I done to deserve this punishment?"

I laughed nervously again. "Now, Mrs Wilde, I can't be that bad."

She stared at me with wide blue eyes and her expression became harder every second. I swear it did. I picked up my bag from the floor and smiled at her, a little unsure. I liked being alive, thank you very much. And this woman seemed to hate my presence.

"I should leave. I wish we had met in a different situation." I walked towards the open door.

She shook her head, but said nothing. I guess, even if we had met in a different situation, she would have hated me for what I had been, instead of what I was.

Jayden rose from the bed. "I'll take you home."

I looked at Alice and shook my head. That would probably be enough for her to attempt murder. "The weather's still really nice. I should walk. I have missed my running this week. I need the exercise."

Jayden put a hand on my arm and led me out of his room. I could feel his mum still looking after us.

"Nonsense. I'm taking you home. I'm really sorry that you couldn't see Cristal today. I promise to bring her over tomorrow or something." He didn't seem shaken at all with the confrontation with his mum.
