Ruined

For a whole week I managed to ignore everyone, including Jayden, Sam and Jewel. It was easy as we were on a half term break. When they came over or called, I made sure nobody answered the door or the phone. If my mum was in, I would ask her to tell them that I didn't want to see anyone. Ignoring Jayden however, proved harder than I had imagined.

It was a beautiful day. The sun was up high in the sky and was bruning bright and hot. I could hear chatter from the neighbours' children as they splashed in their swimming pools. Some dogs barked at each other in greeting. Every once in a while a car would pass with blaring loud music. It was the sort of day when you were supposed to be out and about. Not inside, feeling sorry for yourself. But that was exactly what I was doing. I had a slow music on, at a low volume.

I lay in my bed and listened as my mum opened the door when the bell rang.

My door was ajar, thus I could hear pretty clearly, but I shut the music off anyway.

"Oh Jayden. Hello, dear!" My mum said enthusiastically. She had met Jayden a few times in the last few weeks and had cried a little when she had first seen him. But she was used to him now.

"Mrs Kilham. How are you?" came Jayden's smooth voice. It was low but not low enough that I couldn't hear.

"I'm very well, thank you. Just relaxing with Mark in the garden. We barely get the sun when it's our days off, you see. The sun seems to show off in weekdays when we're stuck indoors. It's rare to have such nice weather on a weekend."

"Yes. My mum usually complains about the same things." I could hear the smile in Jayden's voice.

"I see. How is your mum, anyway?" Mum didn't like Alice much, but she was much better at hiding her emotions than me.

"She's very well. Sends her greetings."

Hah! Mrs Wilde sending greetings to my mum! Pah! I wanted to laugh.

"Well tell her that I send my love also. Would you like to come in?" mum asked kindly.

I held my breath and sat up in the bed.

"Actually I came to see Chyna," was Jayden's reply.

"She's not feeling very well. She asked me to tell anyone who came that she wasn't in the mood of meeting anyone. I'm very sorry dear," my mum sounded sincerely sorry.

There was a silence. A very uncomfortable silence. I held my breath.

"Not even me?" Jayden asked, his tone was the same, but I knew he was upset.

"Especially you," my mum laughed nervously.

"I don't understand. It's been a whole week since I last saw her. She wouldn't answer my calls, emails or texts. Did she tell you what I did wrong?" he stopped trying to sound casual and all the worry seeped into his voice.

My heart clenched at his words. He was trying to put the blame on himself. Shit!

"No, darling. She hasn't spoken to me at all. All I know is that, she barely comes down to eat and...erm...she has cried a little in the past week." Mum was being a little too honest!

"Why?" Could he have sounded more worried? Because he did.

"I have no idea. As I said, she hasn't spoken to me at all."

I bit my lip when Jayden didn't answer. Then my heart stopped when I heard his next words.

"Could you tell her that...if she wants to break up with me or somethin' she should do it face-to-face, rather than block me out. I'd really appreciate it if she could gather up the courage to do it properly. I think I deserve that much." He no longer sounded worried; he sounded upset and let down.
