I held onto Jace’s arm as he supported me after our kiss. I blushed when I saw the people around us staring. I heard Emma’s bell like laugh.

“You knew he was here?” I asked shocked. She stood leaning against the shelf.

“Yup, I saw him walk in so I texted you.” She said.

I looked up at Jace. “Where you not going to tell me you were back?” I demanded.

“I was-- I was just afraid.” He defended himself.

“Yeah, sure looked like you were scared to see her,” Emma teased.

I picked an egg shell from his hair. “Why don’t you come back to our house and get cleaned up?” I offered.

“Yeah, sounds better than the hotel I’m staying in. It’s really boring.” He complained.

“You just want to see him shirtless,” Emma whispered. I threw daggers at her with my eyes.

My hands gripped the steering wheel as I followed the streets through Trenton. I waved at a few people, but was mostly concerned about the problem at hand. I was glad Jace was back and I guessed he was glad to see me, but would we still be the same? Was he still the Jace I remembered or had some blond bimbo turned him into a hardcore California player?

I pulled into the driveway and another pang of fear struck me. I had forgotten about Jack. What would Jace say? I shoved the thought from my head and climbed out of the car. I looked up at our Victorian house. It had taken my dad years to make the house look this good.

Emma’s car pulled into the driveway followed by Jace. “You take upstairs shower I’ll take downstairs ok?” I directed him. He smiled.

We went through the back door avoiding getting milk and egg all through the house and avoiding Jack. I led Jace up the stairs. “You remember where the bathroom is right?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Jace said.

“Ok, great. I’ll find you something to wear while we wash your clothes.” I said, disappearing into my room. I dug the box marked “Jace’s stuff” and rummaged through it. I had meant to send it to him, but since he never gave me his address I couldn’t. I pulled out a shirt and a pair of shorts he had left here one time after we got into a water fight in the kitchen. I smiled at the memory of my parents coming home and the whole kitchen being soaked, Jace and I included.

I ran back to the bathroom. The water was already running. “Here are your clothes!” I called out. I quickly opened the door and threw them on the sink.

I ran back to my room and began tearing my closet apart trying to find something to wear. My hand reached up onto my top shelf. Usually there were a few things up there. My hand ran across fabric and I smiled in victory. Maybe this would be alright to wear. I took it down and frowned. It was a pair of shorts and a shirt folded up. The shorts used to be my favorite until they were stained with blood. The shirt had a rip on the shoulder and a blood stain running along the arm and down the side. I didn’t remember why I had kept them. I went to throw them in the trash. My hand froze above the basket. It seemed like such a big part of my life. How could I throw it out? I shook my head and threw them back onto the top shelf. I picked out a random outfit and rushed downstairs to shower.

I had learned to take really quick showers living in a family of 5. I was done, out, and dressed just before I heard the upstairs shower click off. I twirled a piece of my jet black hair as I paced across the living room.

“Will you stop pacing? Why are you so nervous? It’s just Jace. I mean he obviously is still in love with you.” Emma said. She sat on the edge of the couch toying with one of Andrew’s skateboards he’d left in the living room.
