I looked down at Jack. His eyes danced behind his eyelids as he dreamed. His hair was sticking up here and there. I climbed carefully off the bed, making sure not to wake him. I closed the door lightly and tip toed down the hall. Jace lay with his back to me when I entered the room. I crossed the room quietly and crawled into bed.
“Is he asleep?” Jace asked, rolling over.
“Yeah, finally. I had to build a wall of blocks in front of his window so ‘the scary man’ wouldn’t come back.” I answered.
“Why us?” Jace said. It was a question that had been floating around in my head all day. Why had this boy picked us?
“I don’t know. This whole thing scares me Jace. I just want it all to stop.” I whispered.
“Your dad will find him and everything will be ok,” He reassured me. He rolled onto his back and I laid my head on his bare chest.
“You’re a good dad,” I told him.
“Did you tell him to call me dad?” He asked, laughing.
“No,” I whispered. “He decided to,”
“I wish I was,” Jace muttered.
“Me to,” I answered.
“It doesn’t seem to make much of a difference to you. You treat him better than most mothers who wanted their kids.” Jace said.
“You didn’t see me after he was born,” I whispered. “The doctor said I had postpartum depression. He read me the ‘risk factors’ for getting it and I qualified for a lot of them. Number one was if you were under 20 years old. Number three if you didn’t plan the pregnancy. Number seven was pretty much the reason, if you had a poor relationship with the father. I didn’t sleep for a week, I wouldn’t eat or move. My mom would beg me to hold him, when he would cry and I would just look at him. Twice I tried to slit my wrists. One night I slept walked to the Trenton Bridge. Andrew followed, good thing to. I tried to jump.”
“How’d you get back to normal?” Jace asked.
“I was sitting downstairs one day and Jack started crying. My mom looked at me like I would kill him. She scooped him up and took him away and I followed her. Jack looked at me over her shoulder… and I wanted him. Just like that. I wanted my baby.” I answered.
“I should have been here.” Jace muttered angrily.
“It wouldn’t have made a difference.” I said. Jace sighed, knowing it was true.
Jace rolled over on me, leaning on his hands. “You are the best mother I’ve ever met. No matter what happened,” He bent down and kissed me.
“Now Jace, according to Jack you don’t want me to see you, so off.” I laughed, pushing him off.
“I don’t know where he got that idea,” Jace laughed. I covered my eyes and looked away from him.
“I’m not allowed to look,” I teased. Jace crawled on top of my stomach, one leg on either side on me.
“Look,” He whispered his voice deep and seductive. I laughed. He let out a huff, not the reply he was looking for.
He leaned down so his lips were inches from my ear. “Look,” He whispered again. I shivered, and then laughed. Still not the reaction he was looking for. He pulled my hands from my eyes gently and held them in his. I squeezed my eyes shut, smiling.
“Isabella, you have to look or else I’m going to do something you won’t liiiiike.” He sang. I only laughed. He dropped my hands and ran his hands down my sides and up under my shirt.
“Who said I didn’t like this?” I laughed, still holding my eyes shut. I felt Jace shrug as he wrapped his hands around me pulled me up. My face was inches from his.
“Look,” He begged. I shook my head no. He pulled my shirt over my head and held me against him. He kissed down the front of my body. I leaned back, smiling.
“How is this going to make me look?” I asked.
“Because,” He whispered in my ear. “I’m not Jace.” My eyes popped open. Jace laughed and pushed my down with a kiss.
“That… was… not… funny!” I shrieked in between kisses.
“I thought it was hilarious,” He said, kissing my neck. “I mean really Izzy it was me when you closed your eyes did you really expect it not to be me?”
“I don’t know. Get off me, I’m mad at you.” I shoved him off and rolled over.
“Aw, I’m sorry I didn’t mean it.” He apologized, impersonating Jack. He was surprisingly good at it.
“I’m not talking you,” I muttered, childishly.
Jace kissed from my neck down to my shoulder, my arm, my fingers, I yanked my hand away. He laughed. He kissed the back of my neck, every bone of my spine; I scooted away before he reached the top of my shorts.
“Don’t be mad at me Izzy.” He begged. I kept silent.
“Fine, I’ll leave you alone,” He surrendered and turned over. I smiled in victory.
“Don’t forget to turn on your alarm clock.” I said. Jace mumbled something and turned on the alarm clock. I rolled over and wrapped my arm around him. He smiled and rolled over on top of me.
“Forgiven?” He asked.
“Forgiven,” I agreed.
