Ray
We pull up to the mall and I get out really quick so I can open Summer's door before she does.
Summer smirks. "Such chivalry."
I smile. "I know. I know." I open the back door and unfasten BabyGirl from her seat. "Let's go, pumpkin." She jumps on my neck, and I hold one of her hands to make sure she doesn't fall. The other hand is holding Summer's as we walk in the mall.
When we get in there are some people staring at us, but I ignore it like I always do. Summer, on the other hand, is eyeing people back. This girl is hilarious.
"Diddy!" Raylynn says.
"Yes?"
"Let Mommy wear your hat, so I can play in your hair. It's so long!"
I smirk as I give Summer my hat. She looks mighty sexy in it, might I add.
We shop around for Raylynn for about an hour or two until we see somebody and Summer hides behind me.
I laugh. "Baby, what's wrong?"
She peeks from around me. "That's my mom."
"Okay... And?" I ask.
Summer sighs. "For one, she doesn't know I'm gay. For two, she thinks my dad is still in town. That's why she hasnt asked for me to come back to her house."
I sigh. "Baby. Number one, you're almost seventeen. I'm pretty sure you can stay at home by yourself. Number two, if she can't accept who you are then, fuck her. She can't make you come home. Especially with me standing right here."
Summer steps from behind me. "She's not like that. She'll accept me to my face, but I know behind me she'll hate me so much."
I hug Summer. "Look, I love you for who you are, and she loves you. She just has to find out who you are. If you would just let her."
Summer nods in my arms. "Okay. Okay. Just... Walk normal. If she sees me, she sees me. If she doesn't, she doesn't."
I grab one of Raylynn's hands, and Summer grabs the other one. RayRay has us on either side of her and she's putting her weight on us so she doesn't have to walk. We're swinging her back and forth when...
Summer
"Summer," my mom says. She walks over with my baby sister and stops in front of us. She's dressed a little unusually. She has on a bomb ass dress and heels
My heart is racing hard. My words won't come out.
Ray covers for my nervousness. "Hey, I'm Ray."
Janelle ignores Ray's gesture. "Yea, sure. I bet you are. Uhm, Summer... Why haven't you been answering your phone?"
"I... I've uhmm... Been busy."
Janelle looks me and Ray up and down. "Summer, um, is there something you want to tell me. Maybe that you're gay?"
I swallow my fears. "Yes. Im gay."
Janelle looks appalled. "After everything I've done for you, you gone go gay. All of the successful kids I set you up with you're gonna settle for an obvious drug dealer with a kid... Really?"
I feel the tears coming. "And what about you, you pothead?" I scream. Okay, now we're making a scene. "You think Ray's bad when she's the best thing that's ever happened to me?"
"No, the best thing that ever happened to you was going to Louisiana." Janelle is such an ass.
"Where you let them touch all on me and prod their little hands around your child?" I ask. "Huh?"
"That money is getting you through high school!" she counteracts.
"No!" I correct. "My dad's money is getting me through school!"
"What dad?!" she asks. "He didn't tell you?" she says with an evil smile. "He's in jail! Life in prison, honey. So, wake up and smell the roses."
Tears are rushing down my face. "What?" I say in a whisper. "For how long?"
"Weeks now..." She says. Her face makes it obvious she didnt want to tell me. "I'm so sorry." She attempts to run to me to hug me.
"Move bitch." I say subtly. "Ray, I got to go." I take off running. I'm in a full off sprint.
Ray's running after me, but I guess with all of this adrenaline I left her in the dust...

I'm in a hotel on the outskirts of town when I finally decide to text Ray. I have my plans together. I'm gonna take off to Texas. Houston, probably. Start over.
Ray's been blowing me up.
Me: yes?
Ray: where r u?
Me: I'm leaving town. I gotta get out of here
Ray: ...look outside.
What? I look outside my window and there's Ray, standing there with a smile.
Ray would like to FaceTime...
Answer.
I answer the phone smiling. "Ray. How can I run away if you're following me?" I ask.
She smiles. "I figured we could run together."
Run together.
