Ray
We walk down stairs because we smell food burning. Classic mom.
I run in front of Summer's limping self to go check on mom. When I get downstairs she's in a smoke filled kitchen. "Mom, are you okay?"
She coughs. "Yes, baby. I'm fine. I just wa-"
Dad cuts in. "Was trying to cook for y'all when I said we should just order pizza."
I laugh. "I bet you ordered it anyways, didn't you?"
Mom rolls her eyes. "Of course, he did. Always complaining about my cooking." She looks the other way.
Dad runs up behind her and sits his chin on her shoulder, hugging her. "I love your cooking."
My mom smiles. "Really?"
He nods. "Yes. When it's edible." Dad starts kissing all on mama's neck.
We all laugh.
Mom hits dad. "Clay, not in front of company."
I look back and see Summer. She has one of my old basketball T shirts that stops mid-thigh on her. I didn't even know she came down. I sit at the counter and touch the seat next to me, gesturing for her to sit there.
She comes.
"Oh, hush. What do you think they were doing up there?" Dad asks mom.
Mom cuts her eyes me.
I throw my hands up in innocence. "I didn't do anything. Took a shower, gave her something to wear, and came down."
Mom looks at Summer. "Would you like some cookies?"
Summer smiles her beautiful smile. "No, thanks."
Mom puts cookies in front of her. "Go ahead. Don't be shy."
Summer laughs.
"Mom..." I drag out. "Don't be pushy."
Summer hits me. "Don't tell your mom what to do."
Mom hits me. "That's right, Summer."
I smirk at Summer. "So, y'all are gonne double team me?"
Dad hits me. "Triple team."
We all laugh.
"Summer, what school do you go to?" Mom asks.
"Im transferring from Breuxwood to Ridgewood," Summer says.
"Oh, did you do anything at Breuxwood?" she asks.
"Yea. I played soccer and basketball and ran track and was on the cheer leading squad." Summer grabs a cookie. "And I won state at gymnastics for Breuxwood."
Mom chokes on her own cookie. "A gymnast? An athlete! Finally!" Mom looks up to the sky. "Thank God." She looks at Summer and touches her hand. "You're gonna be the funnest daughter-in-law yet!"
I cough. "Um, mom. Not my girlfriend."
She eyes me. "And why not?"
Everyone's waiting on this answer.
"Because..... You know....."
Summer cuts in. "Well, we just met today."
Mom gets wide-eyed. "Really? But y'all click so well already. That's good. Y'all should really-"
"Mom-" I start.
"Candace, I think that's the doorbell," Dad says.
Nice save dad.
"I didn't hear anythi-" Mom starts.
"C'mon Candy." Dad pushes her out of the kitchen.
They both leave.
I look embarrassed at Summer. "They sure are a piece of work. Im sorry for letting them badger you."
She smiles. "They didn't badger me at all. They're nice."
Summer look off in the distance and I just can't help but see how beautiful she is. Then, I notice a piece of lint on her long eyelashes.
"Close your eyes," I tell her softly. "There's something on your lashes."
Leaning in to grab it, it doesnt come off.
"Got it?" she asks.
"No. Just be still," I soothingly speak. "Beeeee Stiiiiilll." I get an inch from her face and blow it off. "Okay. You're good."
When she opens her eyes we're face to face. Practically touching.
I just cant help it. I kiss her. And she kisses me back!
We go on and on into the passionate kiss fighting for dominance, but I win and her body goes weak. I hold her waist so she doesn't fall. This is it. This is right. This is-
"Hey, kiddos. The pizza is h-" Mom starts.
We both pull away from the kiss in haste.
Mom slowly back up and whispers, "I'm sorry." She's smiling really hard as she exits the kitchen.
I laugh, and so does Summer.
"I'm sorry, too," I start. "It just kinda was the perfect moment, I guess."
Summer's blushing. "Don't be sorry. I-I liked it."
I smile back. "C'mon. Let's go eat."
Summer
I kissed Ray...... But I'm not gay....... But I like her.... What. The. Absolute. Fuck. She's fucking with my mind.
Ray grabs my hand and leads me to the same room I was in when I first got here where Clay and Candace share the couch. All that is left is the chair. Call me crazy but that couch is made to fit three and they're taking it all up on purpose, so that Ray and I have to sit in the reclining chair together.
When they notice us, they look up and smile. We go fix our plates, and I look at Ray. Ray's smirking at me as she always is.
She wraps her hand around my waist and guides me to the chair, placing me on top of her.
This is officially awkward.
Clay is flipping through channels when my favorite show flies by.
"Wait!" Candace and I say in unison. We both laugh.
"You watch Pretty Little Liars?" she asks.
"Do I?! Yes!" I squeal. Okay. Maybe I'm over excited as well.
"Me too!" Candace smiles. "You should so come over on Mondays to watch it with me."
I smile back. "Deal. But I've missed the last two weeks soooo fill me in, girl."
She gasps. "So remember how we all thought Mona was A?"
"Yes?" I recall.
"Well, she's dead! And they're still getting texts!" Candace is on the edge of her seat.
"Swear?!" I squeal.
"On my life, girlie. Woo!" she wipes sweat. "This is getting so good."
Clay and Ray make eye contact.
"Girls," Ray says.
Clay rolls his eyes. "Tell me about it."
WOOF! WOOOF!
Clay gets up and looks out of the window. "Guys, come look. This has got to be the most handsome Doberman I've ever seen in my life."
Ray and I look at each other.
"Shadow," I say.
Candace is at the window now. "You know him?" she asks.
I smile. "He's mine."
They open the door and Shadow runs in, jumping on me. Shadow accidentally knocks the recliner over, forcing me on top of Ray.
Ray hits her head.
"You okay?" I ask, sitting on her torso. I bend down to kiss her forehead.
She smiles. "Just peachy."
