CHAPTER XVII : PROM-A-SAURUS
Everyone filed into the choir room, and the excitement in the air was potent as we got closer and closer to Nationals and closer to prom "A big congrats to all our prom nominees! But, hey, listen up. We are all winners because Principal Figgins asked New Directions to sing again this year!" Mr. Schue announced to cheers from the club. Poking Blaine excitedly, my brain started immediately whirring, trying to come up with songs "All right, Brittany has an announcement" "Hello, my fellow Americans. The theme for this year's prom will be 'Dinosaurs'" "Sheer genius" Santana said, encouraging her girlfriend "Thanks. I was inspired by the new girl Joe, who reminds me of a cavewoman. The refreshments will be berries, meat, and rainwater. As you are no doubt aware, the U.S. elections are riddled with corruption. Therefore, to keep the prom elections completely aboveboard, I have appointed Santana and Quinn to count the ballots" Brittany said, too many confused looks "What? That makes no sense?" Kurt exclaimed confusedly "Shut it, Richard Simmons. Yes, Quinn's my homegirl, but I don't trust her, and you know she doesn't trust me" Santana said, crossing her arms "We'll keep each other honest" Quinn added, raising her eyebrows "You know, it's actually not a bad idea" Mercedes said, smiling in an impressed way "And last but not least, all hair gel has been banned from the prom" My eyes widened and I looked over at Blaine. He stared at Brittany and shock and fear, trying to laugh it off as a joke "Right" He said, not believing her "I'm actually not joking. Hair gel was not invented until almost 30 million years after the Upper Paleolithic Stone Age.
And frankly, I don't like the way you look. Therefore, anyone who shows up to prom wearing hair gel will be turned away at the door. I hereby decree this to be the best prom ever" Brittany said, much to Blaine's disappointment. I smiled sympathetically at him and took his hand comfortingly "Okay. Let's start thinking of dinosaur songs" Mr. Schue said, clapping his hands.
___________
"I remember my first prom in high school. I had just gotten with Jordan and I wore this horrible bright pink prom dress, ugh, I'm surprised Jordan still stayed with me" Moriah said as we looked around the shop for my prom dress "Oh, I remember that! I thought you looked like a Disney Princess" I said, holding up and navy blue dress against myself. I grimaced slightly at it and shook my head "Okay, it's decided navy blue is not my color, it makes me look so washed out" "Oh, come on now. You look gorgeous in every color" Moriah said, coming up beside me. She looked down at the dress and then at me "Maybe just not every style?" "I'm never going to find the right dress!" I exclaimed, head-butting her shoulder and crushing the dress between us "Hey, cheer up. We'll find one, I promise. Now, what did you say the theme was again?" She asked, taking the dress from me and hanging it back up on the railing "Dinosaurs" Moriah gave me a strange look, with raised eyebrows and pursed lips "I know" "I don't know, black? Brown? Ivory?" "Ivory! Yes, ivory is perfect. It will go with your hair and that necklace Blaine gave you!" Moriah exclaimed excitedly, beginning to rummage through the hangers, looking for an ivory dress "Are you sure?" "Yes! It's a lovely color and you can put flowers in your hair and you'll look amazing and natural!" "Whatever you say, crazy lady," I said, joining her in searching through the dresses. She pulled out a skin-tight, ivory dress and handed it to me. I grimaced slightly at the sheer brightness of the dress but tried it on for her sake. I came out of the changing room and did a little twirl. She pulled a face of disgust and handed me a different dress. It was strapless, with a sweetheart shape and a flared-out skirt. Once again, I tried it on and once she saw it on me she shook her head frantically, before passing me a third dress. It was a mermaid dress with a deep v-neckline. I walked out of the changing room. Now, this. This dress was perfect, it was a beautiful color and, it was just amazing. I took it from her hands excitedly and ran into the changing room, almost tripping over the hem of the hooker dress. I tried it on and it fit perfectly, it accentuated everything I wanted to show off, it didn't look too tacky and shiny, it was simply not too eccentric, and with what I was planning to do with my hair, I felt like the goddess of nature in it "Come out! I wanna see it!" Moriah called out, clapping her hands excitedly. I walked out, smoothing out the dress as I approached her and a bright smile on my face. Moriah's jaw dropped and she placed her hands over her heart "Naya, you look so beautiful" "Thank you" I said, blushing slightly "Oh, my baby sister's all grown up! She's a woman now! I've done my job, she won't need me anymore, she's a big girl" Moriah said, throwing her hands up dramatically. I quickly rushed over to her, grabbing her hands and pulling them down "You are making a scene" I hissed at her as she pretended to cry "Would you stop? Your job's never going to be done, I'm always going to need you. Even when your old and grey and I'm still young and sprightly" "We're only ten years apart" "A lot can happen in ten years. I mean ten years ago, I was about to turn seven and obsessed with barbie dolls, now I'm a Regional winning show choir singer and budding photographer. Ten years ago, you had just turned 17 and had only just met your future husband, now you're married with four kids-" "It feels like five with you" "-And an amazing future ahead of you" "You never know, in ten years, you could be married with kids" "Oh, yeah? Who would I be married to? Bob the Builder?" "No, Blaine" "Okay, nope, nope, it is too soon to be thinking about all that. No, no, no" "Relax, stop freaking out" "I don't want to think that far in the future. I'm not ready to be married, I don't even know if I want kids, why are you talking to me about this, did Blaine say something to you? Oh my
God, is he going to propose? I'm not even 17, I'm not ready for this, Moriah what have you done? I'm not ready for marriage, Oh my Lord" "Naya, Naya! Calm down. Blaine hasn't said anything to me, I swear. I was just thinking. You don't have to worry about that right now. The only thoughts that need to be bothering that pretty little head, are what shoes you're going to wear with that dress to prom and what song you want to sing at Nationals, not babies and marriage. Just take a deep breath, I'm sorry for freaking you out, I was just teasing" I took a deep breath, like she told me to, and calmed down. She chuckled at me and I slapped her arm playfully. I went a got changed back into my t-shirt and jeans before going to buy the dress at the counter.
__________
Blaine, Kurt, and I walked into the auditorium when we heard music coming from it. We saw Rachel, sitting on a stool in the middle of the stage—alone and collectively decided to join her, grabbing stools as we went.
Big Girls Don't Cry — Fergie (Sung By Rachel With Blaine, Kurt & Naya)
"Rehearsing for prom?" Blaine asked when the song finished "Cause I love that song, but it's sort of a downer, don't you think?" "Blaine" I hissed, slapping his knee and shaking my head at him "It's just how I'm feeling right now, okay? I don't want to watch Finn and Quinn get crowned the king and queen at my prom. I don't want to watch him dance with her. I—I know that she can't dance anymore, but I'm sorry. You know you know what I mean" Rachel said, getting so frustrated she started stumbling over her words "She's right. Prom sucks" Kurt said frowning "I don't wanna go either" "Well, you have to go. You're the reigning prom queen. You have to crown the next one" Blaine said, making my eyes widen "You are? That's so cool!" "It's not cool, it was embarrassing. As much as I love a good coronation, I can risk it, With this school's strong and insane tradition of write-in ballots, I could get elected prom queen again, all right? And I know I put on a brave face last year, but it was humiliating. And, had I known, I would have worn a full kilt, so..." Kurt said sadly "How do you think I feel with Brittany's insane ban on hair gel? It's prom. There are going to balloon all over the place, not to mention the taffeta and the silk blends. The sheer amount of static electricity in that room is going to be terrifying" Blaine said, throwing his hands up in frustration "It's crazy" Kurt said as he and Rachel started laughing "You've never seen my hair without gel it's-it's baby hair fine. No, I'm going to look like Medusa. It's not funny. I don't want to go" Blaine said, sounding a bit like a baby. I took his hand comfortingly, whilst trying to hold back my own laughs "Well, if we're all going to be so miserable about it, who says we have to go?" Kurt said, raising his eyebrows "You're right, Kurt. But I have a better idea" Rachel said vaguely.
__________
"So Kurt, Blaine, Naya, and I are throwing an anti-prom party" Rachel announced to the Glee club, doing little jazz hands "What's an anti-prom party?" Mercedes asked confusedly "It's a party for those of us who maybe feel a little, you know, disenfranchised by the actual prom. And I got us a hotel room at Lima's best hotel, Red Rooster Express Suite, and everyone's invited" As the rest of them spoke a little, Blaine came over to me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders, leaning his head down so we could talk between ourselves "Are you sure you want to do this? I'll go to prom with you if you want. I know you've already bought your dress" "I don't want to force you into something you don't want to do" I said, smiling softly at him "Besides it'll be fun, we can still dress up and it'll be more private and we'll be with our friends. What more could I want?"Blaine smiled back at me and leaned down further, pressing a kiss to my lips "The mood will be celebratory, the food will be catered, the libations will be plentiful, and the dress code will be creative black tie" Kurt said excitedly "Optional, optional, optional" Rachel said quickly "And keeping up with the anti-prom theme, everyone is welcome, and unlike the actual prom, which ends at 11:00 p.m...ours goes until the wee hours of the night. It's where the fun's at, you guys" Rachel said, clapping her hands happily "Okay, how is everyone welcome when this is just a party for you, carrot-top, and the two gay Winklevii twins?" Santana asked, doing air quotations with her fingers "Actually, Santana, we've invited most of McKinley's underclassmen" Rachel said matter-of-factly "I'm in" Puck said, standing up from his seat "But what about your tradition of trying to spike Coach Sylvester's punch bowl? I almost lost my teeth for it last time" Artie said "Every day at this school, I found out the strangest things" I mumbled to myself "It's impossible, Plus it's a bummer. always failing at everything" Puck said sadly, coming to stand beside me and then walking towards the door "Can we just talk about what this really is? Rachel Berry isn't getting her way, so she's punishing the rest of us" Santana said snidely "Santana, that's not the case at all" Rachel said defensively "Stop acting like you're fine and start dealing with your crap. Look, you choked at your big audition. I get it. I'm sorry, but it happens. And I understand that you're pissed off at the universe, but imploding on one of the last nights that we have to spend together because you're just not in the mood to dance is maybe the pettiest thing you have ever done. So have fun at your 'I'm a victim' party, acting like you're not some selfish, self-centered, lame-ass wannabe diva from hell, because me, I'm going to go to my senior prom with my girlfriend and my friends"
__________
I had decided to get ready for the anti-prom at Lauren's house so she could help me with my hair and makeup.
She handed me my dress, shoes, and jewelry, telling me to go into the spare room and get changed. Once I was dressed, and looked into the mirror, even without my hair and makeup done, I still felt so confident, and quite frankly, I felt beautiful. The dress I had chosen to wear, was a floor-length ivory strapped dress, with a deep v-neckline. I put on my silver shoes, open-toe and bedazzled with diamonds, and my earrings and necklace Blaine had gotten for me, for Valentine's and Christmas.
