CHAPTER XXII : MAKEOVER

{Blaine's Pov}
Everybody Wants To Rule The World — Tears For Fears (Sung By Blaine)
Alright, time to change things up. Last year, it was all about letting the seniors shine. But this year it's my turn. I signed up for pretty much every club at McKinley but it still didn't feel like enough. Part of the reason I was doing all of these extracurriculars was that with Naya's new job—internship thing, we hardly spent any time together outside of Glee rehearsals. I'm not complaining though, I'm insanely proud of her; she's following her dreams, it's just hard. Even though she's right here, as often as she can be, I still just have this feeling—like I miss her. But not miss her more like, miss how things used to be, you know? Maybe that's why I decided to run for President. I walked up to the sign-up sheet and went to write my name down when Brittany stopped me "What do you think you're doing; Blaine Warbler?" "I'm running for President"
__________
"Wait, why are you running for President?" Naya asked confusedly as I went with her to help with her errands "I don't know, it seems fun. I want to make a difference in the world, you know? So why not start with McKinley" She nodded her head as we walked into a photography store place "Do you think I shouldn't?" "No! I mean, yes, no. Hold up, I'm confused" I chuckled softly at her as she paused in her step "What I meant was no, I don't think you should not do it, I think yes, you should do it" "Okay, I think I understand. You speak so fast sometimes I can't comprehend what you're saying" She rolled her eyes and gently hit my arm before grabbing my hand and pulling me over to the section of the store that sold cameras "Do you need a new camera?" I asked her as she crouched down, looking at the ones on the bottom shelf "No Alessia does, hers broke a couple of days ago and she asked me to grab her a new one when I'm free" "Remind me again who Alessia is?" "She's the head singer and photographer, my boss essentially" Naya explained, tucking her hair behind her ear "Are you paying for it out of your own money?" "No, of course not. She gave me some money of her own, so I wouldn't have to pay. Okay, this ones good" She said, she held out her hand to me "Blainie, can you help me up my knees have gone dead?" I chuckled slightly and pulled her up to her feet "So, love, how about after this we go and get dinner-" I was cut off by her phone ringing in her bag. She quickly rummaged through it and grabbed her phone "Baby, I'm so sorry it's Alessia, can I quickly take this?" She asked, frowning slightly "Yeah, yeah of course," I said, waving her away. she smiled apologetically and walked away from me, going to a quiet part of the store. I looked over the cameras, I knew nothing about them except what Naya had told me. I knew she probably needed a new one and our one year was coming up. Naya came running back over to me, a look of regret on her face "You've got to go, don't you?" I asked as she placed her hands around my neck. She nodded sadly "I'm really sorry, baby. There was a disaster with the photos, they didn't print properly or something and Alessia needs me to help her. I know you wanted to get dinner, can we rain check?" "Yeah, sure definitely," I said, nodding my head "Great, thanks, your the best," She said, pressing a quick kiss to my lips "I love you," She said before running off "I love you too," I said to the air where she had been standing before, and I sighed.
___________
"Okay, as you all know, as national champions we get to host the annual Show Choir Rules Committee meeting," Mr. Schue said "I didn't know that, why does nobody tell me these things?" Naya whispered annoyedly, I chuckled softly at her and wrapped my arm around her chair pulling both her and the chair closer to me and then wrapping my arm around her shoulders. She smiled softly up at me and I smiled back "Please tell me you're gonna ask what 1/3 vintage meant last year?" Tina asked, laughing "Or like, why do some teams get to sing six songs and others only do one?" Sam said confusedly "Yeah, I thought that was so weird when the Warblers did like two songs at Regionals, we did three, and then the other team did one and it happened again at Nationals. Like, hello, ever heard of consistency?" Naya said, throwing her arms up in frustration "Speaking of competitions shouldn't we start like, preparing for ours?" Jake suggested and Naya did finger guns at him. I shook my head and grabbed her hands lowering them "Why do I keep doing finger guns? It's like I have no control" She said, staring down at her hands in wonder "I have some ideas which I am working on, very hard" Mr. Schue said to disbelieving stares from the rest of us "Um...Well, I don't really want to give anything away right now..." Mr. Schue rambled on with some crap that no one really understood and it became very clear that he had no ideas, like, at all "Excuse me, I'm not sure if what you were saying was actually important 'cause I wasn't actually listening but I'd like to make an announcement" Brittany said, jumping up from her seat and standing up at the front "First, I'd like to know if anyone can prove that Blaine was actually born in this country" I exchanged a look of confusion with both Tina and Naya and they both simply shrugged their shoulders, not understanding where Brittany was coming from "Second, I'm wrapping up the election by selecting Artie as my running mate" "Ah, alright" Mr. Schue said as the rest of the class applauded "I think by bridging the human-slash-robot divide, we'll ensure that both students and vending machines will be voting for us" "Still not a robot" "Brittany, that's not fair. This isn't a popularity contest, it's about who's got the best ideas. It's about believing you can make a change, right?" I said, looking around at the class. Naya placed her hand on my knee and squeezed it encouragingly "Absolutely babe" She said, smiling happily at me "What is that taste in my-? Is that sour grape?" Artie said, licking his fingers.
___________
Brittany and Sam approached me at my locker, Naya was off doing a job for Alessia so I couldn't use her as an excuse if I needed to leave, no that's mean. I shouldn't be using my girlfriend as an excuse "Blaine Warner? I'd like to introduce you to Sam Evans" Brittany said "Um, we've actually met several times" I said confusedly "He's your candidate for vice president" Brittany explained with a bright smile "Uh, no. I'm picking my own running mate" I said, placing my book back in my locker "My family's on food stamps, so that will get you the sympathy vote. I'm not gay, so that'll help with the not-gay vote, and you know, I don't want to brag. My impressions are hilarious 100% of the time. It's George Bush, come on" Sam said, smiling excitedly. I raised an eyebrow at him and crossed my arms "Okay, sure" I said, extending my hand out to Sam. He shook it happily and I smiled at him "Awesome. First order of business, Artie and I challenge you and Sam to a debate" Brittany said "You're on" to said before Brittany turned to leave, her ponytail flicking out behind her "What's a debate?"
__________
"If I'm going to be completely honest, I'm a little worried that my picking you as a running mate is going to seem like a desperate grab for the straight vote if you don't really look like a serious candidate, you know?" I said to Sam as we walked down the corridor "What do you mean, pilgrim?" Sam said, doing an impression "Was that John Wayne?" "Yeah, I panicked" "Okay, listen. When's your next free period? I need you to meet me and Naya in the costume shop"
__________
"Blaine, I don't completely understand why I'm here, I know nothing about clothes...or politics I'm literally sitting here in a pair of jeans and a Harry Potter sweatshirt," Naya said, swiveling around in a spin chair "I know, Naya, I just thought you would be helpful with the academic side of it all. Okay so, test scores at McKinley have gone down six percent every year for the past decade—What would you do to fix the problem?" I asked Sam, who was playing with a pair of scissors. Naya got up and quickly took the scissors out of his hands, not trusting him with them "Stop giving tests. They're hard, and there's way too many of them" "That's not a bad idea, actually" Naya said, high-fiving Sam "Naya, you're not being very helpful" I said, frustratedly "You the one that asked me to be here, so..." She mumbled, crossing her arms "Okay, let's talk wardrobe"

Nay-Nay:
Blaine, I'm really, really sorry. Alessia needs me to stay late tonight so I have to cancel, how about tomorrow? I love you.
Reading over the text from Kara and sighed. This was becoming too much of a regular occurrence. Lately, it was just becoming too much, the overwhelming loneliness. It seemed like she was prioritizing her job over me, and whilst I understood that she needed this for college and she was trying to follow her dreams—I felt like she was forgetting about me. It was almost as if, she was becoming—well, like her parents. I feel like if she knew that, maybe she would try and change but it would also hurt her so badly. She's such an angel and I know she's not doing this intentionally, she can't control when her boss needs her or anything like that. But I miss her, I miss her so, so, so much. She's the love of my life, and lately, it's felt like we were heading towards the inevitability that all high school relationships met—the breakup, but Naya and I are different, right? We could work through this rough patch and come out stronger, right? I would do anything for her, and even if this relationship did in heartbreak, I would still do anything for her. I wouldn't change anything that had happened if I had the chance, I would everything I've done for her, over and over again, just for the slightest chance that we would end up together. I got up off of my bed and headed over to my guitar. I picked it up, plugged it into the amp, and sat back down, propping the guitar up on my lap.
All Again For You — We Are The Kings (Sung By Blaine)
I picked my phone off the bed and quickly text Naya back.
Blainie:
It's fine, I understand.
Nay-Nay:
You're the best!
She really was adorable, and no matter how much I wanted to be mad at her for not really being around, I just couldn't be.
When she was around she was so bright, so happy, so cheerful. She was so welcoming and accepting of the new Glee members, she respects my sexuality, she respects Unique's gender, and she's just wonderful. My life would be infinitely worse without her, but you know, recently I can't help thinking if maybe she's getting bored of me. The thought of that being the reason why she's hardly around, killed me. Or maybe she's just changed because half of our friends left. I mean Kurt and Quinn were her best friends and they're gone, they hardly ever call. Maybe she's throwing herself into her job so she doesn't have time to miss them like I'm doing with my extracurriculars, so I don't focus on Naya's absence. Anytime I think about how much I don't want her to leave for a shift, or I get annoyed that she has to cancel, I get a sudden feeling of guilt.
Like a punch to the stomach. How could I get annoyed at her for following her dreams? She's so talented and as far as I'm aware she's doing well with her job. It's only a two-month opportunity, she's already halfway through, I just had to hold on for 5 more weeks and then things would go back to normal. I would have Naya and wouldn't feel so alone, and Naya would've had this amazing experience that will look fantastic on her college application. All I needed to do was hold on, and then everything would be okay again.
__________
"Attention, minuscule segment of the student body. Principal Figgins is out this week, with what he describes as religious fever. And I am forced to moderate these proceedings" Sue said, on the day of the debate. I was backstage preparing to go on when Sam came running up, dressed in a suit "Hey, dude, uh, now that you made me over—can I give you some advice?" He said, patting my shoulder "Yeah, sure" "Lose the bow tie" "What?" "Yeah, trust me, it makes you look uptight and a little like a young Orville Redenbacher. Just take it off" "Okay. You know what? Actually, it's you're actually right" "Oh, come on now, you look cute with and without the bow tie," A voice said, snaking her arms around my waist. I looked into the mirror in front of me and saw it was Naya "You made it!" I exclaimed happily "Of course I did! Alessia let me off early, and I really fancied watching a debate, so why not go see my handsome boyfriend compete against one of my other friends for Student Council President?" She said, chuckling softly and straightening up. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her into my lap, making her squeal "You are amazing Natalia Vasquez" "Not as amazing as you Blaine Anderson" She said, poking my nose "Okay, I should get to my seat" "Yeah, you probably should" I said with a sigh and a pout "Aw, don't give me that look, I'll be out there, cheering you on and then I'll congratulate you properly later" She said, with a wink. I blushed a little and she leaned in pressing a kiss to my cheek "For good luck" She stated before skipping off to get to her seat "There are two new utterly disheartening wrinkles to this year's absolutely pointless contest. First, the horrifying fact that this year's slate of candidates consists entirely of Glee Club members. And secondly, the inexplicable introduction of a vice presidential field for no discernible reason whatsoever" Sue said, on the stage "Separation of powers! Whoo!" Someone heckled from the crowd "So let's meet these second-tiered losers. You know them as the pimp and the gimp. Artie Abrams and Sam Evans" The curtain opened and revealed Artie and Sam at their podiums "Stumbles, my first question is for you. Who, in God's name, gives a hot, wet, steamy dump about student government?" "I do. And I think everyone in this room should, too. First of all, student government isn't just a way for us to pad our college resumes. It's a way for us to take an active role in our own education. Study after study shows that an active student body is a successful student body" "Okay, moving on" "Student government is just the beginning. We need more after-school programs, and better-qualified staff to support our teachers, who are overworked and underpaid" Artie continued "Oh, dear God" Sue said, dropping her head onto the table "And that's just the beginning. I want to talk about the cafeteria, 'cause I believe.
awww. at the beginning of every year
to see if...enough to support our brain
activity...that's one of the many goals I promise to reach by the midway point of my first term, as outlined in my 96-point Pierce-Abrams Road map To Restore MeKinley's Future" Artie's little speech took ages and when it was finally over, Sue slammed her head down onto the table she was sat at "Merciful sweet Jesus, thank you. Sam Evans, your response?" "I wasn't really listening. Whatever Artie said, I agree with that" "@Hungry South Mouth asks Sam Evans,
'Rumour has it you were a stripper. Aren't you ashamed?'" "No, I'm not. In fact..."Sam, ripped off his top, throwing it into the crowd and I hung my head, there was no way we were going to win now. Later, when it was Brittany and I's turn to come on with our vice presidents, I was very on edge. Sam finally joined me, fully dressed again and I sighed in relief slightly "Students at this school have every right to be angry. Last year's student council, led by my opponent, was the most ineffectual in a generation. Brittany S. Pierce, in her last term, accomplished absolutely nothing, except plan a dinosaur-themed prom and ban the use of hair gel. Ladies and gentlemen, telling anyone what they can or cannot put into their hair is disgusting. It's the first step towards tyranny, my friends. Next thing you know, they'll start burning books. And then they'll probably start burning people, too" "That's a lie" "This tyranny all ends today, McKinley. I want to offer you a change. And I am that change. Let's make history, Titans. And vote Anderson-Evans" "Sweet, simple Brittany. What say you?" "Uh, I love you. I love you so much, McKinley High School. Simple as that. In fact, I think that everyone should love this school as much as I do. If you elect me as president, I promise to outlaw summer vacation, so we'll have school all year round. That means we'll spend every day of every summer indoors with all our friends, in McKinley High School's award-winning air conditioning. Also, I promise to end McKinley High School's policy of having weekends. If you make me your president, Saturday and Sunday will be illegal, so that Monday will come right after Friday, which is the funniest day anyways. Vote Brittany and Artie. Thank you so much" "We just lost the election" I heard Artie mutter.
__________
"Attention, students. Your record-low election votes have been tallied, and we have a winner. Becky, can I get a xylophone to flourish? No? Not feeling it? Okay. This year's Student Council President is...Blaine Anderson"
__________
I was the Student Council President, and everyone was celebrating at Breadstix, cheering me and Sam on but do you know who wasn't? Naya. She was late, again. I walked through the crowd, accepting congratulations and any handshakes or hugs that were thrown my way. I stopped in my tracks as I spotted Artie in front of
me "Congratulations, Mr. President," Artie said, extending a hand out to me "Thank you, Artie," I said, smiling brightly and shaking his outstretched hand "Losing the bow tie, that was your game changer—kudos" "No hard feelings. Maybe I can find a place for you in my administration" "No, thanks; I got what I needed. Sugar asked me out on a date. She invited me to horseback riding. I'm just hoping it doesn't involve being towed. Have you spoken to Naya? haven't seen her anywhere" "Yeah, yeah, she just got caught up at her internship, you know? Just, running a bit late I'm sure" "Well, congratulations" Artie said, before wheeling away. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and called Naya's number. It rang a few times before she answered "Blaine, hi. I know, I'm really, really late. I'm just finishing up here and then I'll be there. Where is the celebration again?" "Breadstix, when do you think you'll be here?" "Uh, I don't know, 10-20 minutes maybe. I'll text you when I'm arriving" "Good, 'cause you know, I would like to celebrate with my girlfriend, and you know spend maybe one evening with her without it being cut short or canceled" "What's that supposed to mean?" "I just—no, don't worry. I'll see you when you get here" "I love you, Blainie, you know I do" "I love you too," I said before hanging up the call. I sighed as Sam came up to me, patting me on the back before sitting down in a booth "There's the man of the hour. You alright?" He asked, smiling "You know, it didn't hit me until right now. I came to McKinley for Kurt and Naya—that's it. And now Kurt's gone and Naya's just busy all the time, always canceling on me or leaving early and when we are together all we're doing is running errands for her stupid boss. And even with Glee Club, It's just—I feel real, really...alone" "You're kind of killing my party buzz, bro" "I'm sorry, it's just that I did all of this for her, I did all of this for her. And now she's not here. And so it just kind of feels like none of it matters" "Of course, it matters. Your McKinley's 'First Non-Straight Guy President'" "Nobody cares about that" "Look, before you, Kurt was the first you know, what's it—LGBT kid I met. Don't get me wrong, he's great, but I just don't really get his Bravo jokes or the fashion thing or Broadway. And I love Naya, man, she's an amazing girl, one of my best friends but I can't like bro around with her. You and me, it's different, you know? I never had a gay bro before. We'd be like Wolverine and Cyclops, you know, show people what we call each other. And you know, if you ask me, that's what matters" "Thanks, man. You're right. But just so we're clear..." "I'm Wolverine," We both said simultaneously. I stood up, chuckling, and ran into Brittany "Congratulations, Blaine Warbler" "Thank you, Britt" I said before walking past her "Blaine!" I heard Naya's voice call from across Breadstix. I turned around and saw her running up excitedly. She threw her arms around me and hugged me tightly, swaying slightly "I'm so, so, sorry I'm so late, babe" She said, kissing my cheek "You're always late, or you leave early or you cancel" I said sadly "Yeah, I've noticed. I've been really terrible lately. If you could get a grade for being a girlfriend, I would be getting an F. And I'm so sorry. It's just Alessia's got me doing all this stuff, and I'm not trying to make excuses or justify my behavior at all, I'm just too terrified to say I can't or something like that because she could fire me and that would be just horrible. But from now on, I'm going to try my hardest to stick to my official work hours and try not to work too late. You mean the world to me Blaine and I hate the thought of me making you feel how my parents made—well still make—me feel" "It's okay, Naya. I understand" "No, it's not okay. Don't pretend like it is. I'm really, truly sorry" "Well, I accept your apology" "Good because I want to express just how proud I am of my boyfriend. The Senior Class President!" "Thank you, love" "I love you Blainie" "I love you too Nay-Nay"
