CHAPTER XXVI : DYNAMIC DUETS
{Blaine's Pov}
"The Secret Society of Superheroes Club is now in session. It is the purpose of this club to fight injustice, to right all that which is wrong, and to preserve truth, justice, and peace in the halls of McKinley High. First order of business roll call.
Go" I announced. Yes, I'm in a superhero club, no I am not ashamed "Asian Persuasion here. My superpower is being the mistress of manipulation" "Blond Chameles a here. My superpower is I can impersonate anybody. George W.
Bush, heh" "Tarantula Head here. My superpower is lashing you with my dreads" "Sweet 'n' spicy, here. My superpower is money" "Second order of business inducting new members into our ever-swelling ranks. Candidates, come forth" I said, waving forward Artie, Becky, and Brittany "Excited to be here Blaine," Artie said, and I sighed annoyingly "First of all, there are no civilian identities in here, okay? I am Nightbird the Nocturnal Avenger. And second of all, I hope you're not trying to pass yourself off as a certain telepathic leader of a certain group of superhuman mutants because that would be a copyright violation" "Uh, I'm Dr. Y and my superpower is wheelies?" "Welcome, Dr. Y. Next" "I'm Queen Bee and I can sting like a bitch" "Welcome, Queen Bee. Next" "I'm the Human Brain" "Welcome, Human Brain" My phone made a cawing noise—my notification ringtone and I picked it up, staying in character "What's this? A text just came through on my NightPhone. 'Have you talked to Naya?' I already told you, Asian Persuasion, this account is only supposed to be for emergencies, and you cannot use your powers of manipulation to coax me into getting back with my ex, so stop trying" Dottie Kazatori came running in frantically and I stood up "What is it, Chai Tea?" "Emergency in the choir room" She exclaimed, gesturing for us all to follow We all ran down the halls towards the choir room, our capes flying out behind us "Someone took your Nationals trophy and left that laptop in its place" She explained, "Who leaves a laptop?" "Someone rich, someone who wanted to send us a message. I got this" I said, stepping forward and pressing play "Greetings, New Directions" A computerized voice said. It was a Warbler—you could tell from the Dalton blazer "You have been living as national champions on borrowed time, and that ends now. We have your trophy. Soon we'll have your title as well. The great reckoning is at hand Sectionals. Your move"
__________
Half the Glee Club was in costumes, including myself. Sure, a lot of people found it but I liked it—it's nice to know I was having a positive impact on people's lives. I watched the doorway, waiting for Naya to walk in. When she did, she did a double take. She glanced around the room her eyebrows furrowed as she saw everyone in the costumes. Her eyes settled on me and her eyebrows further, and a small frown appeared. I furrowed my own eyebrows, wondering why she was frowning at me just simply looking at her, then I remembered what she said last week 'don't talk to me, don't look at me, don't even think about me'. She looked away from me and walked into the room properly, stopping by Finn who was staring at a picture. she placed her hand on his arm and they smiled at each other, I felt a pang of jealousy. That was stupid though, me? Jealous of Finn? No way, there was no reason to be. I knew for a fact Naya and Finn were just friends they saw each other like siblings. No need to be jealous, nope, nope, поре "Okay, guys, sit down. We got a lot of work to do today. No, seriously, come on, I mean it, sit down" "Hey! Shut up and sit down!" Naya shouted from beside Finn before going to sit down beside Marley and Sam "Thanks, Naya. Okay, so the first order of business today is to welcome the newest members to the Glee Club Ryder and Kitty" Finn announced "Wait, don't we all get to vote on her or something?" Tina asked "Yeah, no offense but Kitty's a bitch" Naya said, crossing her arms "Well, Tina, Naya, Kitty was fantastic in Grease" Finn pointed out "In spite of my god-awful part" "Besides, we're under the gun. We have to go to Sectionals next week and we need 12 members to compete" Finn said, shuffling on his feet awkwardly "Oh, well, then, just call Santana back from Kentucky again cause apparently she's better than anyone who's actually enrolled here" Tina said bitterly "Look, Tina, not now. Uh, look, where was I? Sectionals, yes. Here's the game plan. Broke the marker. Where does Mr. Schue keep the other markers? Uh, Screw it. Uh, The theme is 'Foreigner.' We're gonna sing songs by Foreigner in foreign languages, wearing all the costumes of the world's nations" Finn said, trying to find the markers after he broke one of them. Artie chuckled softly whilst everyone remained silent "Wait, seriously, that's your idea?" Artie asked when it became apparent that Finn wasn't joking "Yeah" Finn said excitedly "Kiki, what do you think?" Brittany asked her phone "I think I'm alive and you're the machine" "Finn, times have changed. We're national champions now, which means we have to exceed all expectations, so if that's your best idea, I don't think we stand a chance" I said truthfully, standing up and leaving the room "Wait, where are you going?" Finn asked. I spun on my heels and turned back to face him "I'm going to get our trophy back from the Warblers the one you haven't even noticed is missing" I glanced over Finn's shoulder at Naya and saw her eyes widen before she rolled them and slouched down in her chair. I knew how on edge she got when the Warblers were talked about, despite her and Sebastian being her friend now. I tore my eyes away from her and turned to leave the room again.
__________
I walked down the stairs in Dalton Academy, spotting Sebastian at the bottom of the stair. I sighed and threw my hands up in mock surprise "Sebastian. Of course, it was you. I thought you had stopped all this" I said, joining him at the bottom of the stairs "No, it wasn't, I swear. I turned over a new leaf, remember? Even became friends with Naya, and we still text sometimes—she told me all about the breakup—sucks doesn't it? But anyway, no more bullying, blackmail, or assault this year" He said as we walked through to the Warbler practice room "Well, that must be boring for you" "Yeah, it is; being nice sucks. He's waiting for you in the library"
He said, leading me away from the Warbler room and towards the library "Who is?" "The guy you're here to see. Captain of the Warblers" He said, stopping outside the library "I thought you were captain of the Warblers" I said "Not anymore" He replied. I stepped forward and opened the doors. Looking around, I couldn't see anyone but then out of the corner of my eye, I saw a chair swivel around. In it sat a boy that looked a bit like Sebastian but with a wider head and a more crooked nose. He had a white cat on his lap and genuinely looked like a bond villain "I knew they'd send you" He stated smugly "Allow me to answer the obvious questions. I'm Hunter Clarington, I am the new captain of the Warblers, and I'm not even remotely bi-curious" "How are you captain of the Warblers when-?" "When you've never seen me before? Simple" He said, cutting me off "Dalton just gave me a full scholarship to move here from Colorado Springs, where I led my military academy choir to a Regionals victory with presidential honors. Now I'm here to kick it up a notch, and that starts with you" "That's very intimidating. Where's the trophy, Hunter?" I asked, not intimidated in the slightest. He chuckled and stood up from his chair, leaning against the fireplace "Don't worry, it's safe. It was just bait after all. See, you're kind of a legend here. I like that. So here's my offer. Your little diversity club can have its Nationals trophy back when you rejoin the Warblers" "And why would I ever leave McKinley?" "Why would you stay? I heard you only went there to be with Kurt and Naya, right? Now, Kurt's in New York, and Naya broke up with you" "How do you know about Kurt being in New York and my relationship with Naya?" I asked suspiciously but he ignored me "In fact, I hear they even call you Blaine Warbler. They know you don't belong there—so why don't you?" "We all know the real Blaine, Blaine ambitious, driven. You're a Dalton boy" Sebastian said, walking back into the room with a bunch of other Warblers "Present the blazer" Hunter declared and Sebastian took a blazer from one of the other Warblers, handing it towards me "That's not going to work on me" I said sternly "Then why be afraid to try it on?"
Sebastian slipped the blazer on over my shoulders and suddenly the fire began to roar louder and the cat started meowing.
Hunter came to my side and threw his arm around my shoulders "Here's the thing, Blaine. You know that Nationals trophy was a fluke, just like you know we're going to win at Sectionals. Now, I don't want to see a Dalton legend as you side-lined in his senior year. I want you on the winning side, here with us" "You know what goes great with a new Dalton blazer? An impromptu song" Sebastian said, making the rest of the Warblers excited "What? No, no" I said quickly "Oh, come on, one song for your old buddies" Sebastian pleaded "Guys, I didn't come here to sing a song. Okay, I came here to get-" They cut me off by starting to whistle and harmonize.
Dark Side — Kelly Clarkson (Sung By Blaine & The Warblers)
"What'd I tell you? Flawless" Sebastian said. I quickly took off the blazer and handed it back to them but they didn't take it "Keep it, it's already yours. Don't you think it's time you came back where you belong Blaine Warbler?"
__________
Finn came walking into Glee the next day in a superhero costume. I leaned forward in my seat, I couldn't stop thinking about the Warblers. I did feel at home with them, but I also feel at home here, but not so much, now that Naya's left me. Maybe I should go back? I was brought from my thoughts as Finn announced that were doing a project called 'Dynamic Duets' "This is gonna be a lot more fun, and it focuses on something you guys actually like" Finn said excitedly "Oh, so wait are we all gonna have to wear costumes?" Marley asked self-consciously "I am not down for that," Naya said, flicking her gorgeous, silky hair over her perfect shoulders—no, I can't be thinking about her like that anymore "And who exactly are you supposed to be? The Bulge, who makes gym socks disappear?"Artie said, making people chuckle "Please don't melt us with your bulge," Brittany said "Oh, please help me, I need the Bulge to save mel Oh, whatever shall I do if the Bulge doesn't rescue me?" Naya called out dramatically, pretending to faint in her seat. Finn shot her a look and I felt the jealousy again—ugh, why am I jealous? They're just friends! "I am the almighty Treble Clef, Uniter of Glee Clubs" He clarified "Boring, stick to the Bulge!" Naya called out "Jesus is the one real almighty superhero," Kitty said "Amen" Joe agreed, "Nobody asked you" "Come on, guys, let's hear him out," Ryder said, shutting everybody up "Thanks. Look at the Avengers. Individually, they all have amazing powers, but as a team, they cannot be stopped. Right now, we're a bunch of individuals with great powers and talents, but we're not a team. Some of you even have mortal enemies in this very room, allowing the Dark Side to turn us against each other, when we should be focused on the Warblers" "Nightbird is handling the missing trophy" I said, speaking in the third person "Great. Thank you, Nightbird. Jake will pair up with Ryder, and Marley will join Kitty to perform the duets. The rest of you, start preparing to fight an epic battle against the forces of evil at Sectionals"
___________
Superman — R.E.M (Sung By Ryder & Jake)
By the end of the song, Jake and Ryder broke out into a fight. There were screams and pleas to stop Sugar was shouting at Finn to do something but nothing was working. Well, that was until Naya got up and grabbed them both by the ears, twisting them and pulling them apart from each other. She looked like a real superhero in her costume, her purple cape flying out behind her "What the hell are you knuckleheads doing?" She asked angrily as the two boys were trying to wriggle their way out of her hands and lunge back at each other "Sam, Finn! A little help!" She called out. Finn and Sam jumped into action, Sam grabbing Ryder and taking him out one exit whilst Finn took lake out the other way. Naya sighed and went over to Marley, checking she was okay.
__________
"Hey. You got a minute?" I asked, walking up to Finn in the choir room "Yeah. Dude, I was just gonna text you.
How is Operation: Rescue/Recovery going?" Finn asked hopefully "Well, when I went back to Dalton, all those blazers and singing with the Warblers again-" "Wait, wait, what, you sang with the Warblers?" Finn asked frustratedly, cutting me off "It just sort of happened. But they embraced me like I was a long-lost brother. It was like in X-Men 2 when Pyro left the X-Men to join Magneto's Brotherhood. It-it just felt right, like maybe I belong with the Warblers" "Dude, no, no, you belong here, with us, okay? Does this have to do with Naya?" I sighed and nodded my head "I have to see her every day, I just wanna reach out and take her hand, or kiss her cheek but I can't. We were a dynamic duo. Naya was my anchor, Finn, and now that she's gone, I just feel like I'm floating. And you, you need a team that's gonna gel" "Yes, Absolutely, We need a team with a lot of gel, And you're, like, the biggest part of that" "I'm sorry, Finn, but the Warblers are my birthright and my destiny" I said, before walking out of the classroom.
__________
{Naya's Pov}
I felt so uncomfortable sitting here in this ridiculous outfit, I suppose it did comfort me to see everyone else in them but still. I was all for supporting Finn, but why did we have to wear costumes? Marley and Kitty were going up to perform, and I was praying that this wasn't going to end in another fight.
Holding Out For A Hero — Bonnie Tyler (Sung By Kitty & Marley)
Luckily, the song ended, no fights and they both looked happy "That was incredible. You worked so well together. Teamwork! Yeah!" Finn cheered happily as the rest of the class clapped "You guys, I don't smell raspberry hair gel. Does anybody know where Blaine Warbler is?" Brittany asked. I had noticed he wasn't there but didn't want to comment, I take notice of where he is in a room every time I enter the same room as him—but nobody needs to know that "Uh, well, as some of you guys might know, uh, recently, Blaine has been going through a bit of a rough time-" "Oh, boo-hoo. Get over it. It's like a bad Lifetime movie" Tina said insensitively "He's decided to finish the rest of his senior year at Dalton Academy" Finn continued. My jaw dropped and I stood up "Are you being serious? I've been going through a tough time too but you don't see me moving back to LA? God, it's his fault he's going through a tough time!" I shouted getting up and out of my seat "Bloody coward" I muttered as I left the room. I spotted him at his locker and slammed the door shut "What the hell do you think you're doing?" I demanded "Naya—what-" "Answer my question, what the hell do you think you're doing?" "I'm moving back to Dalton" "Why? Because we broke up. People break up all the time! I'm not moving back to LA just because we broke up" "I don't belong here, this place isn't my home anymore" "You do belong here. Those people—the Warblers, they're douchebags. They stole our trophy as a way to get you to go back, they're bribing you and manipulating you. The Warblers are terrible, manipulative, toxic people and you are not. You are kind and caring and we need you a lot more than the Warblers do. The Warblers need you for your voice, but we need you for you. Despite how mad I am at you right now, I'm not going to be mad forever, eventually, hopefully, we'll be friends again and you—you will regret moving to Dalton. Stay, Blaine. Please" "Naya, I'm sorry but this place doesn't feel like home anymore" "I know, it doesn't feel like home to me anymore, it hasn't really since Quinn and Kurt and Santana and the rest of them have left, and since...since we broke up. But it will get better, and eventually, this place will feel like home again. Because it is home. And if you leave now, you are throwing it all away" He stared at me, not saying anything and I suddenly realized what I was doing "I'm still mad at you, but right now there is a chance that we could be friends again and move past this. If you leave that chance is gone" I said, my voice wavering. I sighed quietly and spun on my heel, leaving to go back to the choir room.
__________
{Blaine's Pov}
I was at my locker, clearing it out. Despite what Naya had said, I knew that I still needed to go to Dalton, I didn't belong at Mckinley anymore, and not even Naya could change that "Dude, this is part of some master plan, right?" Sam said, approaching my locker "You're going back to the Warblers to gather intel for us so we can kick their ass at Sectionals" "Sam, don't. I've already heard the lecture from Finn and Naya. I feel awful enough as it is" I said, trying to brush him away "Stop, okay? You've been beating yourself up for, like, weeks since you and Naya broke up. But going back to Dalton? You told Finn it was 'cause you feel more at home there. If you ask me, it's just another way to punish yourself. And for what? What did you do, exactly?" I took a deep breath, pushing away the memory that popped into my head "I don't know how you don't know but I suppose I'll tell you anyway. It was a guy that friended me on Facebook. I went over to his place because it felt like Naya was moving on with her life and I wasn't a part of it. And I got to thinking that maybe Naya and I weren't meant for each other. That we weren't supposed to spend the rest of our lives together. But the horrible thing is, right after I did it I knew that we were" "Dude, you've got to tell Naya that" "What, you think I haven't told her that? You think I haven't tried?" I said, slamming my locker shut "Calm down. It's okay" "No, it's not okay, Sam, 'cause I cheated on the one person that I love more than anything in this world. I hurt her, so of course she's not gonna trust me. She's never gonna forgive me" "Even if she doesn't, you got to forgive yourself. You got to stop What's—what's the word when you make someone into a villain? Uh..." "Villainize?" "Yeah, you got to stop villainizing yourself. Yeah, you hurt Naya. That wasn't cool. So you're trying to make it right. But exiling yourself to Dalton won't fix anything" "I just want to stop feeling like I'm a bad person" "You're not. You're one of the good guys. And I got a whole Glee Club that agrees with me. Give me a day. One day before you pack it all up. One day is the hero we all know you are. And then, you know, you can decide where you really belong"
Heroes — David Bowie (Sung By Sam & Blaine)
"Well? What's your decision?" Sam asked once the song was over. I sighed and smiled softly "One last mission first. You in?" We stole the trophy back, leaving my Dalton blazer in its place with a note that said 'No Thanks'. We ran away as quickly as possible as Hunter and Sebastian walked out onto the balcony we jumped off of—and of course, we were in our costumes.
___________
"Guys, it was epic. Dalton was like Death Star meets Mordor meets Temple of Doom. I mean, I might be exaggerating, but probably not" Sam said as we presented the trophy back to the Glee Club "I owe all of you an apology for ever doubting McKinley's my home. You guys are my home. We've got a real fight ahead of us with the Warblers at Sectionals, but I am not worried at all. Because we've got the team, we've got the talent, and we have, most importantly, the leader" I said, handing the Nationals trophy over to Finn. Everyone cheered loudly as Finn put the trophy back in the case, but he couldn't exactly open it with the trophy in his hand so, he needed help from Naya. They laughed together and hugged, and of course, I felt slightly jealous but not as much as before—things with Naya and I would work out, I just had to wait and believe in us "Alright, alright, alright, alright, alright. Let's start with some warm-ups, and then we can-" "Uh, Finn, wait. Can I say something? This is for you, from all of us" Tina said, standing up with a fanny pack in her hands "It's a superhero utility belt cleverly disguised as a fanny pack" Artie explained as Tina secured the belt around his waist "There's some stuff in there we thought you could use" Joe added "Ah, cool, uh Magic markers. I could never find these. Antacid" "In case you get the show choir squirts. That's from me" Sam explained "Thanks" "Your welcome" "That's from me" Brittany said as Finn held up a Barbie doll head "That's to always remind you that you're the almighty Treble Clef, the Uniter of Glee Clubs. And the Uniter of Friends" I explained as Finn held up a small blue box with a gold treble clef in it "Wow. Uh, I don't know what to say. I'll never let you down. I promise" He said, smiling softly "Okay, come on, huddle up. Alright, let's huddle up. Next week at Sectionals, we are gonna kick some Warblers' sorry asses. Yes. And then it's Regionals, and then it's Nationals, and then this year is gonna go down in the McKinley High record books as the greatest year the New Directions has ever seen. Onwards and upwards!" "A........mazing!"
