She snorted.
"Don't know if I'd do the same for you though!" She growled.
"Shantelle, look I'm sorry...I've been an absolute prick to you! I cannot apologise enough" He said tenderly, that accent she loved so much coming out clear and strong, the cockiness gone.
She turned to give him a piece of her mind, but nothing came out of her mouth.
He was holding the most beautiful long stemmed red rose in his hand.
He stepped in closer to her, "Please Shantelle just let me take you out to dinner and we can talk!"
She had no idea what had possessed her to say yes.
The waiter brought a bottle of the restaurant's best and most expensive champagne over to their little cosy table right in the corner.
"Monsieur, c'est notre meilleur champagne, à mille franc suisse, une bouteille, est-ce à votre goût?" He asked.
Nicolas smiled and answered "Parfait, merci! Voulez-vous verser ma femme un verre s'il vous plaît?"
The waiter smiled, popped the cork in the bottle and poured the bubbly, golden liquid into the crystal flute in front of Shantelle.
He then filled Nicolas' flute.
"Now, are you ready to order?" He asked, getting out his notepad and pen.
"Yes, we'll have the fruit and cheese platter to start with and the herb bread" Nicolas ordered.
"Very good Sir and for the main course?"
"I will have the Chicken Fettuccine and my wife will have the Ratatouille" Nicolas decided.
"Excellent choices Sir, and will you be having dessert tonight?"
"Yes, can we have the Dark Chocolate Tarte and the Lemon Meringue Pie please, with two cappuccinos, both with full cream milk and two sugars in each?"
"Wonderful choices Monsieur, your starters will be brought out very shortly, meanwhile enjoy!" The waiter said with a smile.
Only once he was gone, Nicolas smiled at his Shantelle.
"Your wife huh?" She sniped coldly, "only because you refuse to sign the divorce papers, Monsieur"
"Fine!" He said, "hand them over and I will sign them, though what's the bet you don't..."
Before he could finish, she had placed the papers that would end their marriage and free her of him, for good in front of him.
"And, do you have a pen?" He asked, as she pulled her favourite fountain pen from her bag and handed it to him.
He took it graciously and read the contents of the divorce papers.
"You'll need to sign your signature three times and date it as well," She said as he continued to read.
Finally to her disbelief and as the waiter placed the herb bread and cheese platter down in the middle of their table he gently placed the papers down on a clear space and began to sign them.
When he was done he handed them back to her and said "now that's settled, would you still have dinner with me?"
She knew she should have gotten up then and there and walked out with the papers but of course, she stayed.
She'd forgotten how sweet and amazing he was as they talked, drank and ate.
By the time they got to the club, she was more than tipsy.
