All I wanted was you
Paramore
Just an hour ago, Rafe and Aria were trapped in a bedroom, feeling lost. And now, they were running for their lives, guards completely blinded to the fact they were missing.
Aria grabbed Rafe's arm, directing him towards the small opening in one of the fences, she dragged him through it, the two hoping onto a truck.
Her eyes met with a strangers, his hand immediately flying to his waist as he stood, almost as if he was going to attack her. Before he could, Rafe toppled him to the ground, throwing several punches.
Aria watched in fear, her hand grabbing Rafe's shoulder as he didn't stop, the man's face becoming more mutated with every strike.
Finally, he threw his last punch, struggling as he stood the man up, ignoring Arias pleas and cries as he threw him over the side of the truck, the limp body falling a good amount of feet before thumping against the ground.
Aria blinked, shaking her head as she crawled under a tarp, Rafe doing the same, Aria didn't even want to be close to him. She couldn't decipher if she just watched another life be taken.
"Let them through!" A guard yelled, the trucks engine hissing as it drove, the unsteady pavement rocked the truck back and forth.
Rafe threw the tarp off him, reaching to help Aria out, she shrugged it off of her, her back against the wall of the truck, Rafe's body sliding next to hers.
"I told you we just had to work together." He panted, glancing at her blank expression, "All right. Listen, I'm headed out to my boat, okay? I can give you a ride out, drop you wherever, somewhere safe. One thing though."
Aria continued to stare ahead, more focused on the way the hay shaked every time the truck hit a bump then on the man beside her.
"Look at me." His voice was full of demand, taking her out of her trance, she forced herself to look at him, their closeness made her hands shake, "I know your friends are on the island and my sister. I'm not helping them. All right? I can't trust them, okay? I'll give you a ride out, not them. Okay?"
"I just wanna get off the island." Aria shrugged, staring back at her fingers.
Rafe nodded, his chest heaving, "That's smart. You know, I never thought of you as stuck up."
"What did you think of me as?" Aria pushed, curious where this was going.
"I mean, I always liked you, Ari. You're a Kook but you're not like the rest." Rafe sighed, bringing a hand to smooth over his shaven head.
She swallowed, not sure if the compliment was backhanded or not, "Thanks. I looked out for you, you know. I tried to help you. Instead you tried to kill me."
"I know." His face scrunched up in guilt, "I hate myself for putting you through that."
"I didn't even recognize you." Arias voice was low, full of hurt, "It was you but it wasn't. I wasn't looking into the eyes of someone who loved me, I was looking into the eyes of a stranger."
Rafe's expression only got deeper the more she talked, his fists clamping tightly, "Fuck, Ari. I'm sorry, okay? I was just mad. But you, like, you aren't so innocent. You left me for a Pogue, dude. You know how embarrassing that is?"
"Embarrassing?" She cocked a brow, laughing lightly with anger, "It was embarrassing looking at the hand prints on my neck. It was embarrassing being with someone who never even truly loved me in the first place! So, what? I move on and now you want some kinda pitty?"
"That's not what I want. That's never what I wanted. I've only ever wanted you. All I wanted was you!" Rafe fought back, "I never even knew what love was until we were together."
Aria shook her head, running her tongue along the side of her mouth, "Yeah, well maybe you should've showed that a little better."
"Do you still love me?" Rafe blurted, staring at her intently, like the answer was in her eyes.
She faltered, cocking her head to the side, "Yes. But it's not in the way I love him."
The ride was silent after that. The truck rolled to a stop, Rafe slinging over the side of the makeshift bed of the vehicle, holding his hand out for the dark haired girl.
She took it willingly, dusting the pieces of hay off of her pajamas as she glanced around, knowing Singhs men were scattered everywhere.
"Come on. My boats down here." Rafe took her hand again, dragging her along as she stumbled up behind him, dropping his hand as he climbed into the boat, he reached the top, glancing down at her, "Okay, we should have enough juice to get us to Saint Lucia, no problem. Get in the boat."
Aria stayed still, knowing she couldn't leave them behind. She glanced over her shoulder and back at him, "You're not gonna pull anything if I get in?"
Rafe scoffed lowly, slapping his hand against the wheel of the boat in frustration, "No, I'm not gonna pull anything, okay? I'm trying to do you a solid here. You really wanna be back there with Singh, or do you wanna be somewhere safe? Can you help me with the bowline?"
Aria nodded silently, tucking her hair behind her ears as she stepped onto the boat, crouching down at the bowline, her heart was skipping beats, the plan in her head could completely backfire.
"Hey, uh, I... I can't get it. I need some help!" She called out to Rafe, stepping back from the bowline with her hands on her hips.
He groaned in annoyance, cursing as he skipped down the stairs, his feet slamming against the decking, "Goddamn, do I have to do everything? Move."
He was hunched over the railing, his hands working quickly to untie the bowline, Aria breathed deeply, mumbling to herself before her hands blindly shoved him, forcing him off of the boat and into the water a few feet below them.
She didn't waste any time, scurrying up the stairs, nearly tripping as her shaky hands started the boat, turning the wheel as fast as she could just as he resurfaced.
Rafe's hands smacked against the water, his eyes narrowing at Aria rapidly turning the wheel, "Ari! Ari, where are you going?"
She shrugged her shoulders, the apologetic look on her features only made him more furious, "I've gotta help my friends!"
"You don't know what you're doing! Hey! shit! I'll find you, Ari! I'll find you! Ari, you're gonna regret this sh¡t." Rafe yelled at the top of his lungs, watching her push the boat's maximum speed, leaving him stranded.
Aria kept low, knowing Singhs men were covering the entire area, she docked, crouching down as she fumbled with the phone Rafe had stolen.
Her fingers tapped the new contact button, thanking herself for memorizing JJ's number.
