CHAPTER NINE
Aro sees the look on my face and tenses up slightly as I approach him. His eyes go from happy to worried in an instant as I reach my hand out to cup his cheek and he sees what I am seeing. His eyes squeeze shut tightly and he exhales a shaky breath before opening them. Now his eyes are pleading with me to understand but what I need to understand exactly, I don't know.
His eyes move to his brothers and he speaks, "Our mate is exceptionally gifted. Her instincts and intuition are like nothing I've ever seen before. She sees things, feels things." He pauses and switches his gaze specifically to Caius who stiffens then continues," It's time we had our talk, Fratelli. Avoiding it will only do more damage."
Caius's eyes moved back and forth between his brother and I a few times and then he sighs, his face contorting into a guilty expression.
I grab Aros hand and Pull him with me as I move to stand my Caius and grab his as well then I guide them to the couch. I sit in the middle and they sit on either side of me and try to pull their hands from mine but I hold on to them, refusing to let go.
"Whatever you are about to tell me is not bad enough to warrant refusing your touch. Just tell me. I have a feeling I can probably guess what it is." I assure them, flicking my gaze to Marcus, remembering the words he said while I was still in the darkness.
"Please love. I can not bear this loss. Not again."
Marcus's words flitted across my mind. I was not his first love. He had loved someone before me only to lose them and had become the broken man I had first encountered in the throne room because of it. I could not fault him though. He is well over three thousand years old and life would have been unbearably lonely to go all of that time without someone to share it with.
My eyes moved from Marcus to Aro who visibly relaxed while he read my thoughts on the matter, then over to Caius who still seems to think I was going to reject our bond because he had a relationship before me.
Silly blonde baby. I snickered in my head and I felt Aro laugh soundlessly next to me.
"We were married." Aro Admits first, feeling a little calmer than his brother who grows even more tense, Caius's grip on my hand becoming almost painfully tight.
"Each of us has had a wife." Caius's normally confident voice comes out a little shaky and frightened.
"My wife passed away over two thousand years ago. Her name was Dydime. She was Aro's younger sister." Marcus admits, "She was killed during an ambush attack by the Romanian coven."
"My ex wife's name is Sulpicia. She is still living and our wedding contract ended, per the agreement terms, the second you stepped foot into the caste. That moment it became void." Aro adds, making my eyebrows shoot up in curiosity.
Caius sighs and continues after his brothers, "My ex wife's name is Athenadora. She is also alive and we had the same arrangement as Aro and Sulpicia. The difference is where Sulpicia has accepted this for the most part, albeit a little too easily if you ask me, Athenadora is wreaking havoc. She wanted to train me dry of funds before she departs. It does not change the fact that we are no longer married or that she has been nothing but a painful thorn in my side for the better part of three Millenia. She is simply pissed off that she is losing her power."
"That's one of the things we have to finalize. We have been organizing funds and living arrangements as well as suitable guards for our former wives. Though they are no longer married to us they were for a long time and will still have rather large targets painted on their backs." Aro speaks, then lets out another slightly shaky breath and says, "Which also means as our true mate, once word has spread, you will become a target for our enemies."
