CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

POV IN THE BATTLE FIELD

(P.S. I listened to 'Little Do You Know' while writing this chapter)

The kings stood together with stone expressions, looking out at the pile of burning, newborn corpses. The Cullens had already left, choosing to vacate the area as soon as they were given the go ahead from one of their kings. The Volturi guards, who had remained behind with the kings while their queen returned home, were double checking the area and getting rid of the evidence, leaving behind false trails for any loose ends to make sure nothing could be brought back to vampires.

"It's been a long time since we participated in a battle like this, Brothers." Aro said, his voice quiet and calm as the flames whipped around, the purple color casting a strange ethereal glow on the surrounding area.

"Hmm," Caius added, "It's rare that something of this magnitude comes our way in this era. I can remember a time when we often had to split up and take down multiple armies at once. Now we sit on our thrones and allow the guards to clean up after the simpletons that dare to try to break our laws."

Again the kings stood in silence for a few moments then Marcus let out a quiet sigh and asked, "Our mate is going to be furious with us. You two, more so than I , I fear."

"It's not our fault we were ambushed. I'm not sure who told that redheaded witch where we were but They had better hope they are good and dead!" Caius pointed out, hissing in anger towards the end while glaring at Victoria's head which was sitting in a pile of leaves nearby, her body already burning in the pile with the rest of her army.

Marcus gave him a deadpan look and replied, "And she warned us it was a bad idea to split up right now. She said her gift was telling her something was going to happen and something did happen. We owe her an apology."

"I doubt she is anything like Athenadora. Our mate prefers books to looks. Didn't she mention a list she keeps of the books she wants to-" Caius started only to be cut off by a sudden yell and a loud growl coming from the twins direction where they were talking with two younger, gifted newborns who had sat out the fight.

The kings looked over to see Jane speeding toward them with a panicked worried expression while hissing into her phone, "I do not care! No, put her in her room! I will inform the Masters but it is your head they will want! Find the person responsible and gut them like the - THEN TEAR HIM TO PIECES! HE HAS HARMED YOUR QUEEN, DO NOT SHOW HIM MERCY!"

Jane came to a stop in front of the three kings who were all glaring at the phone in her hand with equally distraught expressions.

"Who hurt Sophia? Is she alright?" Aro demanded, reaching his hand out for the device which Jane immediately surrendered.

"What the hell has happened? Jane, who was on the phone, what do you mean our mate has been harmed?" Caius demanded, his freshly fed ruby eyes bleeding into onyx as his fury came forth, his expression promising a very painful end to the person or vampire who had crossed his little mate.

Aro stepped away, hissing through the phone in Italian while Jane bowed her head and clenched her fists over and over again, her entire being vibrating with overwhelming anger and sadness.

"Chelsea found one of the lower guards attacking Mother on her way to your chambers. She said there was no reason for the guard to be there as he is one of the few that were assigned to the former wives while still in residence. He-" Jane breathed in and out shakily, bowing further as if she feared one of the kings might strike out at her for her words, "the guard had her pinned to the wall and was draining her when Chelsea and two other guards found them and stopped him. Mother was unconscious and has not made a single move or sound since being found. They have called for Alphonse and he is tending to Mother currently."
