CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The flight arrived and landed without problems and this time it was Alec who assured me off of the plane. I learned heavier on him but tried not to make it look obvious as he helped me into another care where Jane once again joined me.

"We have a home just outside of Forks rented for three weeks. We figured you'd want to be close to your uncle." Marcus offers after a few brief moments of silence.

"Thank you." I replied, actually feeling excited to see my only remaining family after the last couple of days.

I learned my head onto Jane's shoulder and sighed, letting my mind relax as I did my best to block out intrusive thoughts. Then I realized something and I sat up and pulled out my phone.

I opened my eyes and ignored the ruby gazes that were boring into me as I found Charlie's contact and hit call.

"Hello, little bug, to what do I owe the pleasure of your call this fine day?" Uncle Charlie's unusually happy voice asked from the other line.

I did my best to force myself to sound normal and said,'' Well I figured you'd like a heads up that you'll be seeing me soon. Probably in a day or so depending on when I'm able to get transportation. What has you in such a chipper mood today?"

"That's amazing, Soph! I can't wait to see you! As for my mood, things just seem to be going well for me right now." That made me smile, happy that he had finally found some happiness.

"How does lunch at the diner sound tomorrow? My treat." I offered, wanting to see him and find some familiar comfort as soon as possible.

"Sounds great kiddo! Just so you know if it's your treat, I'm getting two burgers AND some cobbler!" He laughs.

I snort and snark back, "I'd expect nothing less. You're just inching yourself that much closer to an early retirement."

I heard yelling in the background then Charlie said a quick "Gotta go!" The. Ended the call.

I swiped to the next contact and hit call, letting it ring.

Two rings later I heard a familiar, "Hello my darling girl, what do you need?"

"Nothing Momma," I answered, "I just wanted to know how things are going and as I'm sure you know, we will be there soon."

"Yes sweetheart, I know and I already talked with the twins. Your room is prepared for you. I went by the store and stocked the house with plenty of your favorite foods and made sure to get a few of the books Jane recommended."

"How many is a few?" I ask, calculating the length of our state.

"Around twenty last count but I have several more coming from Amazon that none of the local shops had. I know you prefer to buy from brick and mortar stores and I tried but they didn't have them." Chelsea replies casually making me roll my eyes.

"Thank you, Momma. That should keep my mind busy for at least a little while." I say sincerely.

"Of course and if you need more we can get them or order them for you. Oh by the way your uncle's ahh....friends don't like me very much." She said, adding on the last bit.

"What, why?" I was confused as she is a beautiful, kind and caring woman.

She hesitated to say anything but eventually caved and answered, "Well it seems your local tribe carries the shifter gene? Wolf shifters to be exact, and they don't like vampires very much. Jacob was particularly hostile when he found me visiting Charlie."

I heard three low, equally threatening growls across from me but chose to ignore it.

Anger bubbles up inside of me and I gritted out, "If he wants to hold a grudge over something so petty, something you have no control over then I will personally grab my titanium baseball bat from my closet and beat the ever loving shit out of him. Friend or not, no one messes with family."
