Here goes nothing, Keigo thought, as he took hold of the handle. With his free hand, he pretended to scratch his neck, but instead reached inside his shirt and snagged one of the small feathers that was left from from his wings, shivering at the feeling. He then proceeded proceeded do the old keyhole trick.
Before stepping in he looked around to make sure no one was about, then entered, shutting the door softly behind him.
The porch was reasonably dirty - maybe a spot of mopping would clean it up nicely. But still, Keigo decided not to take his shoes off.
Up ahead, there was a staircase next to a short passageway with a door to the right. It wasn't closed all the way, so Keigo crept up to It and peered through the gap.
In there was a woman in a sofa chair, looking at the television. That was always what Keigo's mother always seemed to be doing. That was what Keigo ever really remembered her doing. She could never take her eyes off it. Well, she didn't even have to, not with her extra eyeballs watching the house for her."I was expecting someone else," she said, suddenly. Was she talking to Keigo? Did she know he was there?
What?
The woman finally turned her head, and that was when Keigo could was certain this woman was his mother. She had the same fluffy hair, the same bags under her eyes, the same exhausted look about her. It was her.
This was Tomie Takami, Keigo's mother.
"Who the hell are you?"
Keigo's stomach dropped. That was a bit harsh. She didn't recognize him?
Hesitantly, he opened the door and slowly removed his hood, letting his long hair fall freely. It wasn't like, shoulder length or anything, it just hadn't been cut in a while.
Still, the woman just looked confused, much to Keigo's disapointment - and surprise. He had expected a bigger reaction, not a simple stare. And who knew how many eyes were watching him right now, thanks to her quirk.Ah right, the eyeballs - eyes - she'd have seen me come in. Fuck, I must've looked stupid creeping around.
He swallowed thickly.
"Um, it's me, Keigo. Don't you...remember?"
Tomie was quiet.
"I'm your son!" he told her, almost indignantly.
"Hm."
Hm? Hm? What did 'hm' mean?! This was not a hm situation right now. Keigo wasn't expecting a 'welcome back' celebration, but at least...at least a...
Honestly, he didn't know what he'd expected.
He pointed to his face. "Look at my eyes, see? I may not have wings right now but you can still tell by my eyes, right? It's really me."
Of course - Keigo had always had these odd bird-like black marks under his eyes that made him stand out. Though he thought them cool as a kid, his mother thought there was something wrong with him when he was born. They never disappeared though, so Tomie just said they were birthmarks of some sort.
Tomie squinted at him for a second before sighing. "So it is..." she said quietly. "Did you...fly? To Kyushu? I saw you ran away on the news, but...that was all the way in Yokohama. How- Why are you here?"
"I-I came to see you."
"Why?"
"Well, you're my mother...?"
She frowned. "So, what? You came all the way from Honshu to tell me what I already know?"
Shit. Her tone was enough. Keigo wasn't wanted here. Not right now, at least. Tomie was in a mood. Or maybe it was just his arrival? Did she just want him to stay locked up in prison for the rest of his life?
