I woke up to the sound of the alarm. It's Monday, the first day of my last year in college. I have a class at 9 AM so I have to be quick for I cannot afford to be late on my first day.
I am a full scholar at Milfort University, one of the most prestigious schools in Manila. I'm taking up a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The school is giving me a monthly allowance but I still work as a part-time barista at a small cafe near my apartment and I also do modeling on the side.
I was raised by a single mother—she was an orphan. I've never met my father but I've seen some pictures of him. It was me and my mom alone. And being smart helped me and my mom financially.
I was in my senior year in high school when my mom passed away. And just like her, I became an orphan too.

"Hey, Sab!" Jake and Milliend, my best friends, called.
We took up the same course and we've been friends since, our first year. They both came from affluent families but they are humble and kind people.
After we graduate, we want to start a small coffee shop business right away. We have been planning that business since last year. That is why I'm working two jobs so that I can save for the business venture we are planning. They said they don't want to become corporate slaves as if that would happen. They are expected to manage their family businesses in the future.
"May work ka ba mamaya sa coffee shop?" Milliend asked.
"Monday ngayon diba? Malamang meron! Why?" I said teasing.
"Galit na galit? Gusto manakit?" She replied as she rolled her eyes.
"Ano ba yan? Para kang may mga anak na binubuhay! Inom tayo mamaya! May bagong open na bar sa Up Street. Marami daw yummy na chupapi dun." Jake said with his dramatic voice.
"You guys know I can't..."
"You can't or you just don't want to?" Jake questioned.
"Next time na lang guys, babawi ako. Promise! Kain na lang tayo ng lunch malapit na akong mamatay sa gutom"
And both of them just laughed at me.
This is one of the many times I declined their invitation. Clubs aren't really my thing. I do drink liquors occasionally but not a fan of them. The bitter taste most especially and the consequences that occur after drinking too much.
Our class ends at around 4:30 in the afternoon. I still have a few hours to rest before my work later. My shift starts at 7 pm and ends at 10 pm at the cafe.
Jakey and Milly, as I call them, were fetched by their drivers. They offered to drive me home but I politely declined since my apartment is just two blocks away from school. I also like walking, I don't know, but it makes me happy.
When I got home, I got a call from my modeling agency saying that I got booked for a project. It's for a makeup line of a famous social media influencer and I will have a photo shoot this coming Saturday with the other brand ambassadors. I am working at the cafe on weekdays so most of my modeling gigs are scheduled during weekends. I'm thankful that my agency understands that I have to prioritize my studies.
Friday came and the three of us are eating lunch at the school cafeteria.
"What time is your photoshoot tomorrow?" Milly asked.
"2 pm"
"Can I come?"
"I want to come too," Jakey said in his high-pitched voice.
"Maghahanap lang kayo ng mga gwapong chupapi dun eh"
"omsim! So ano na?" Jakey asked
"Oo na! May choice pa ba ako?"
This is a normal thing with us three, they always want to accompany me on my modeling gigs. They said I'm a little clumsy, "tatanga-tanga ka pa naman minsan" Jakey's exact words to me. I just laugh it off. I actually love when they tag along because we get to hang out after the shoot.
"I will fetch you, girls, tomor---" Jake was not able to finish what he was about to say when we heard clamor outside the cafeteria.
"Anong meron?" Jakey asked one of our schoolmates.
"Bumalik daw si Clay"
The three of us look at each other, appalled.
