Kelani

When I open the door to mums bedroom, I see her on the bed, holding her knees to her chest, like a broken teen girl.

Her quiet sobs crack the organ in my chest and when I step I close the door behind me, her wet glassy green eyes are on me. Then her expression breaks, and so does mine.

"Mama..." I say softly, sitting beside her on the bed, and pull her into an embrace. She breaths deeply into my shoulder and holds her tears.

Before she's able to say anything I pull back and interrupt her "Isabella told me everything". Her eyes drop to her hands and she sniffles.

"Why didn't you just tell me?" I frown, waiting for a response.

"I didn't want you to hate them for me. After all they've been looking out for you when I haven't been. I can't be upset about that" she says through a sobbed half chuckle.

"I can't believe Isabella did that to you. I'm so sorry" I put a hand over hers.

She shakes her head "I don't want you to resent her"

When I furrow my brows and give her a look of outrage that says 'how could I not', she sighs. "It was over twenty years ago, she's not a bad person. She just did something stupid and I just... being back around the both of them is bringing back old resentment that I didn't want to keep in me"

I watch as she fidgets with her fingers, the lines at the corner of her eyes soften when her eyes weaken.  "Don't resent her on behalf of me" she says again.

I remember all those times Isabella cared for me and gave me the motherly affection that I was deprived of. She took care of me when she could, she worried about me, she cooked for me. I defeatedly sigh and nod "she did take good care of me when you couldn't. She was good to me."

She smiles warmly and nods "good. That's good"

"And Gabriel?" I ask.

"That estúpido," she scoffs "what you saw between him was a lapse of judgement. We touched and we shared a moment, and he leaned in and it just brought back memories. It was just in the heat of the sexual tension, if I have to put it bluntly, it happened too fast. And it shouldn't have."

I nod understandingly and take a deep breath "do you forgive him? Her?"

She swallows and turns her head toward the window, and all she does is shrug before chuckling to herself "I found out I was pregnant that day."

I raise my brows, and she turns to me with a weak expression. "She didn't tell me that." I say. "That's because she didn't know, neither of them did. I was about to tell Gabriel, and when I stepped into the room... I saw them. And I ran."

I wipe a hand over my face, trying so hard not to cuss out either of them. That's what Isabella meant, when she said that mum came in like she had an announcement before she caught them and ran off.
