Day had arrived quickly.

Winnie had patched herself up as best she could, the one problem was that her mesh top had been ruined, leaving her in just a small black waistcoat.

To solve this issue, Jesper had given her his green and red tartan blazer to wear.

It solved her problem well enough, but she spent a lot of her time wishing she had been born Inferni so she could heat herself up.

Once Kaz had given the all clear to stop at a place where there were no guards around, the four crows wandered around silently to the back of the carriage, awaiting the reveal of the sun summoner.

If Jesper was telling the truth, then any second now she would open the cargo hold and jump out.

Kaz stood farthest to the left, Jesper by his side. Inej was next to Jesper, and Winnie was farthest to the right.

Winnie had concluded that she was furious with Kaz for what he made her do.

Getting her to beg for his word to save himself? Why would he do that?

She did have to admit, although she didn't believe it was Kaz's intention, the entire ordeal had taken her mind off her earlier run in with the Palace guards and the panic that came with realizing her father knows that she's in Ravka.

He also knew that she was here with Kaz, Jesper and Inej which put them on his list of impending victims. And now, the only other person he wanted in his grasp had also escaped him and had wound up with her.

She could picture him slowly stewing, trying to figure out a way to find them both.

As she did so, the lock on the cargo hold burned red with heat and fell out towards them before the lid swung open to reveal Alina dressed in rags.

The sun summoner took in the sight of the four standing in front of her and jumped out, her hands held defensively in front of her.

This was the first time Winnie had seen the girl. She was around her age and was part Shu.

For some reason Winnie couldn't quite explain, she felt a strong connection towards the girl.

There was certainly sympathy and understanding for Alina was in the exact position she herself had been in. Attempting to escape from the Little Palace and her father's clutches. She could only imagine what kinds of things he had done to her but seeing the lack of scarring Winnie knew Kirigan hadn't so much as laid a finger on his most prized possession.

There was no way that would uphold for long, Alina was right to escape when she had.

Winnie also didn't exactly know how she felt about the whole kidnapping aspect of the plan. In front of her was just a girl, one who had suffered the experience of her father. Winnie remembered back to when she managed to escape. If she had been stopped by some rogue Ketterdam teenagers looking to kidnap her and sell her off she would've been placed in even more danger than if she had just stayed at the Little Palace.

She didn't know what Dreesen wanted with the girl but knowing Ketterdam the ideas in her head were anything but positive.

How could she put her in that position? How could she possibly contribute to this innocent girl's torture? Especially after she understood what she must be feeling.

But there was something more. It was almost like her soul had lit up slightly. That it was asking her to talk to Alina, to get to know her, to help her. To help save her.

"We don't want any trouble", Jesper said as he placed one hand gently on one of his guns in a holster.

"Neither do I, so I'll just be on my way", the sun summoner said as she went to move past Kaz.
