Winnie was currently living out her worst nightmare.
She was restrained whilst being forced to go through the Fold at her father's command.
It was like she was reliving her past.
But if all her years of living with her trauma had taught her anything it was how to push it down.
Sure, it wasn't the most practical solution, but it was the best she could do.
So as she stood in the middle of the skiff sailing through the Fold, she tried her best to swallow the panic that begun to rise inside of her.
She had a job to do. She had Alina to protect. She had a Fold to help take down.
There was no time for silly panicking.
"Can you feel them?" Winnie's father asked the heartrender standing behind them.
"No heartbeats yet, sir", the Grisha replied.
"What about you, my darling. Can you feel them?" he whispered to Winnie.
Winnie had only recently discovered her ability to tap into the Volcra. It had only happened once when she was on the train crossing with Kaz, Jesper and Inej.
She didn't know why it happened or how she did it.
But how could her father possibly know she could if she didn't even know herself until recently?
"How should I know?" she whispered back.
"Because you have a certain ... connection to them", he said as he pulled back her hair to reveal her single black piece.
Winnie flinched her head away from his hands.
"What has that got to do with anything?" she spat.
"It has to do with everything", her father replied.
Winnie furrowed her eyebrows slightly wondering what he could possibly mean.
But she was distracted by the shrieks of volcra approaching them.
"They're coming", Alina said to her right.
"Yes", Kirigan confirmed.
"We should just tear this down now", Alina said as she looked to Winnie.
"And what can you two really do without me?" Kirigan sneered as he held up his hand showing off the piece of antler welded into his skin, reminding them of their connection to him.
Alina and Winnie shared a look.
"Besides, it would be a monumental waste of power", Kirigan added.
Against Winnie's knowledge, three of the individuals on board the skiff had snuck their way underneath the deck.
"This is a bad idea", Jesper commented as he cleaned his guns.
"I think it's rather practical", Kaz responded.
"What? Why?" Jesper said with a scoff.
"I don't see how we step off this boat without you pulling those guns. Besides, Marth will need all the help she can get. So, cleaning them is a good idea."
Jesper laughed.
"I don't mean this", he said pointing to his guns, "I mean this", he said gesturing to their surroundings.
Another growl from the volcra made the three turn their attention to above their heads.
"We are in the worst place in the world, on a ship full of people who want us dead, surrounded by monsters who want us in their gullets, and the one person who could possibly save our asses is tied to the deck under the eye of her psycho father. Oh, I should've bought Milo", Jesper moaned.
