Kaz hadn't slept.
He stayed awake staring up at the stars.
Clearly his exhaustion was starting to have an effect on him as he could've sworn they were trying to communicate with him.
"Is she safe?" Kaz whispered quietly as to not wake Inej or Jesper who were fast asleep on the other side of the room.
He watched as the stars seemed to dim. No.
"Does she blame me?"
The stars suddenly shone brightly. Yes.
Kaz bought his gaze away from the seemingly judgmental stars to focus back on a plan.
Nothing. He had nothing.
Why was it that at the most crucial time, Kaz Brekker couldn't come up with a plan?
You and your slow brain are stumped again, huh?
It was Winnie's voice.
It sounded so real that Kaz briefly looked around to see if she had miraculously escaped and had come back to him.
But there was no one there.
"I can come up with something", he whispered to himself.
Please, there's no way you can come up with something in time before I'm beyond saving.
"Not now, Marth", Kaz whispered.
I don't even want you to come. I told you not to. Remember?
"Shut it."
If you do find a way to me, who's to say I'll even want to come with you?
Kaz stopped replying, hoping silence will be the thing to drive the voice away.
You told me I was dead to you. Do you remember that?
Silence.
So what made you change your mind?
"Be quiet. I need to think."
What made you change your mind, Brekker?
"A small sense of morality. You saved me, now I owe you."
A truth to cover up a lie. Classic.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
How will you ever be able to admit it to me if you can't even admit it to yourself?
Silence.
The reason you're coming to save me is because you care for me.
"You're valuable to me. Like all my crows are."
You did it again.
"You know, for a voice in my head you're able to replicate Marth's infuriating tone to a T."
Fine. Have it your way. But I'll leave you alone after I say this.
Kaz listened carefully.
I'll never forgive you. No matter what you do.
And with that, Winnie was gone from his mind.

The light from the morning sun peeked its way through the holes in the barn walls, telling Kaz he had run out of time.
Inej and Jesper woke from their sleep and Kaz told them to get dressed.
