The group of six had been travelling all day and once it had become dark decided to set up camp to rest for the night.

After Winnie's conversation with Kaz she had made a point of avoiding him in every way she could.

Always walking at least two people in front or behind him. Avoiding eye contact whenever she would pass him. Even resorting to hiding in her shadows when everyone other than him was engaged in conversation.

She had too much on her mind at the moment to be thinking about some boy. Especially Kaz Brekker. The boy she could never have.

She had to focus on the matter at hand. With her father gone she was now presented with the issues resulting from his actions.

1. The Fold was still up. Alina needs to take it down, and if she can't Winnie will have to try a different way.

2. She was a part of the Fold. Because she is a part of it will she be destroyed when it is?

3. She had absorbed another part of the darkness which now lived inside of her. She struggled enough with her darkness before, what does it mean now that it has doubled?

4. Because of what her father had her do on that ship; everyone will now be after her. They will see her as a threat and fear makes people do all sorts of things.

5. She's going back to Ketterdam. A place where the people who could get their hands on her would, and once they did there was no telling what they would do to her.

6. She had discovered more about her ability today than she had in her entire life. What else could she do?

7. Grisha needed protecting now more than ever. How could she possibly abandon them?

8. She needed to heal. Alina was right. She had been through so much and had bottled it all up tightly. One day it would explode. She needed to make sure that when it did, she could handle it without losing control and succumbing to her darkness.

9. She needed to finally move on. Grieve her father. Tie up her business in Ketterdam and leave for good.

10. Finally, she would have to prepare for the worst. If Alina failed and wasn't strong enough to take down the Fold, Winnie had a way. Her father had warned her that trying to consume it all would be too much. That it would kill her or worse, turn her into something just as dark as he was. But if it meant destroying it once and for all, she wouldn't hesitate.

Mal and Kaz were working on a fire whilst Inej and Alina had started to set up the area they had chosen so they could get some rest. Jesper had vanished into the woods to try and shoot something for them to eat, so Winnie decided to find a quiet place she could sit with all these problems shouting in her head.

Without a word, she had disappeared into her shadows and worked her way up a tall tree that sat just outside where the others were.

Winnie rested her back against the trunk of the tree as she straddled the thick branch she had chosen right at the top and let her legs hang down on either side.

She pulled out her small bag that contained the supplies she needed to stitch up her wound on her arm and got to work.

As she bought her arm round to the front, she stared into the circular gash. Her memories of how it got there came flooding into her mind.

How her father had connected them together. How drained she felt when her power was used by him. How he had used them to expand the Fold, destroying the city and killing innocent people. How she had tried to stop him but had failed.
