Newmerica

We should have known by now that things will never go the way we think they will. It was just rare that they would end up in our favor.

FIVE DAYS AGO

- '' Hey look at that'', Doc suddenly said, breaking me and Murphy from our kiss that was planned to be the last. We turned to look at the way he was pointing to see the drone starting to fall down.

- '' It's coming down'', Lily said. Just then the drone hit the ground and there was a big explosion following.

- '' Was that supposed to happen?'', Doc asked. None of us knew any better.

- '' What about the fallout?'', I asked as the black particles were still falling down the sky following the trace of the drone.

- '' Murphy, try it'', 10K said.

- '' Wait what? Why me?'', Murphy asked.

- '' You're quite red already'', 10K shrugged. Murphy gave him a face but carefully stepped outside and caught one black chip in his hand.

- '' Does it burn?'', Doc asked.

- '' No. It's just warm'', Murphy said, looking at his hand. The black dot on his hand melted away like a snowflake and left no mark behind. Murphy turned to look at us.

- '' Hold on. Did the world not end?'', he asked, looking at us. Lily stepped outside and caught some ''snowflakes'' as well.

- '' I don't know if this is supposed to give us radiation or something, but so far it does nothing. Maybe Warren succeeded after all'', Lily said. Just then I realized it. I grabbed Murphy by his shoulder.

- '' Warren!'', I said, and everyone understood what I meant. We had to go see if she survived, even if the odds were slim. We all hurried outside to our vehicles and started to drive towards the smoke trace left by the drone.

BACK TO THE CURRENT TIME

Warren indeed did survive since she was pretty much immortal, and now that her mission was over and the world was somewhat saved ( at least from one crisis), we decided to head to Newmerica. The drive took us a couple of days, but we were getting closer. We started to notice some signs of humanity when we noticed a couple of guys sitting outside like it was nothing. We stopped our car and got out of it.

- '' Hello fellas. Do you happen to know where Newmerica is?'', Murphy asked them.

- ''  You're looking at it'', they answered.

- '' Pardon me?'', Murphy asked. Just then a woman came out behind their tent. Her hair was pretty short and she was wearing a leather jacket with a tank top.

- '' I heard you are interested in Newmerica. This is our recruitment base. You've come to the right place'', the woman said.

- '' And who are you?'', Murphy asked, but Warren seemed to recognize this woman as she went in for a hug.

- '' It's a walk from here. Let's go'', the woman, who introduced herself as George, said. We all followed her for a while through a road that seemed pretty deserted. There were no zombies around. Eventually, we arrived at a gate that was guarded by two men with snipers.

- '' You'll have to go through a check-up before you can enter'', George explained.

- '' Check-up?'', Warren asked.

- '' Yes. Everyone living can get straight in. The rest have to go through quarantine''.

- '' Who exactly are the rest?'', Murphy asked.

- '' The talkers. Zombies that kept their souls. It's a long story but you'll understand it eventually. Come on'', George said before leading us to a tent with several doctors ready to check us. They checked for a pulse, body temperature, and bitemarks. I didn't think much about it until one of the doctors told another one to come to check out something on my back.
