Four months ago, I received a phone call from my husband. The man who vowed to love and cherish me for richer and poorer till death do us part. Vows that I took very seriously, and it was evident that he didn't think highly of them at all. The man who had made me happy every morning I opened my eyes with just his smile. This is the man who blessed me with my son, the most precious thing in this world to me. The man that I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with. The man who had all my love and all my affection. This is also the man who gave me the worst heartache and pain that I couldn't even imagine another human being could sustain. Who would have thought that one phone call could have changed life in so many different ways?

That day was just like any other day. I had woken up, gotten my little man ready for school, dropped him off, went to the gym, ate lunch with my sister, picked up Lamar's clothes from the dry cleaners, and went to the market. After the shopping was done, I went home so that I could clean and then run out and get our son. When I walked into my front door my phone rang. I switched the groceries to my other arm to get my cell phone out of my purse.

"Hello," I said as I kicked the door close with my foot.

"Hey babe"

"Hey, I just walked in the door. I'm going to get Little L from my parents after I finish doing some things around the house. Then I'm going to start dinner." I said with a happy wife tone. Not being the wiser. "Where are you?"

"I'm at Terrence's house."

"Tell Terrence I said hello. Ask him if he is coming over for dinner tonight?"

"I don't think he's going to be able to make it tonight, babe."

"Terrence loves my cooking." Terrence is Lamar's best friend. From the moment Lamar introduced us, it was an instant friendship, and we have been tight ever since. He is like my go-to guy when I am down or need someone to talk to other than my sister. "On your way home, do you think that you can stop past my parents' house and pick up Little L?"

"Um, that's what I wanted to talk to you about," he said as his voice changed.

"What's wrong? What do you need to talk about? Can it wait until you get home? I am cooking your favorite tonight, and I want to get started early. You deserve it, for being such a wonderful husband and father."

"Well..." he said with hesitation. "Uh, babe, damn."

"Lamar, seriously, what's wrong?" I asked again, being the concerned wife that I was.

"Well, there is no other way to say it. I was thinking that we maybe need to take a break for a while."

"A brea--" I blew the rest out then struggled to say, "A break?" I asked him with confusion.

"You know, spend some time away from each other. You know...taking a break," he said casually as if what he was saying was normal.

"Married people don't take time apart. That is one of the reasons why people get married so that they can spend time together." I said with a now frustrated sound to my voice. "Is this a joke? Are you trying to be funny? If this is one of your jokes, then you need to stop this right now because this isn't funny." I said as my heart almost jumped out of my chest.

"I'm sorry... this is not a joke," he said.

"I don't understand, Lamar. Please, you need to think about this. You don't know what you're saying." tears started to form in my eyes as I stood in the dining room, clinching the back of one of the chairs at the table. Noticing that now at that moment he wasn't joking.

"Please believe me when I say that I'm sorry, but I think this is for the best." he was calm and collected.

"The best! The best for who?" as the tears poured profoundly down my face.
