"Darlin'! I'm home!" Sheriff called out to his wife as he walked in the front door, closing it behind him. "I'm in the kitchen." Sheriff smiled and removed his hat and boots, hanging the hat on the coat rack and putting his boots beside it.

Hanging his coat up too, he then made his way into the kitchen where he found his newly pregnant wife, Emily, making dinner. He came up behind her, kissing her cheek and cupping her little baby bump in the front with his big hands. "Hey beautiful." He said in his gruffly voice.

Emily smiled and turned her face to greet him with a kiss. "I missed you." "I missed you more. I missed the little one here too." "Don't forget we have our checkup Friday to find out the gender." "I already told my deputies I wouldn't be in that day. I wouldn't miss it for the world." He kissed her lips once more and said, "Go rest darlin', I'll finish cooking dinner." "But I still have to do the laundry and..." "Baby, I know you like to keep busy but your pregnant now. Remember what the doctor said, you need to rest more. Especially with it being high risk. I would...I would die. If something happened to you and our baby." Emily turned into his arms and said, "Your right. I'm sorry Sheriff." "Nothing to apologize for sweetheart. Just rest. Let me spoil you."

Emily giggled and said, "You always spoil me." "Well then Princess...be quiet and go sit down." She slapped him on the chest lightly making them both laugh before she sat down at the counter and watched him as he washed up. They talked about the baby and their day while he cooked.

After dinner she insisted she do the dishes but Sheriff had none of that. "Oh no princess. You go sit down, prop your feet up, and put on a movie. I'll do the dishes." Emily smiled and said, "Ok. Thank you." They kissed each other gently and then she went and sat on the couch. About to put on her favorite old show when her phone rang. It was her mom. Emily was reluctant to answer, but she had promised herself with the baby on the way she would try to get along better with her mom for the baby's sake. "Hi mom." "You need to learn to answer the phone in a timely manner young lady. It's rude to keep someone waiting whose taking time out of their day trying to talk to you." Emily flinched at her mother's lecture. Trying hard not to cry already.

Her mother, Alyssa, was emotionally abusive. Emily had gotten used to it but with the pregnancy her emotions were out of wack. Besides being with Sheriff she never had to worry about being upset. He was so gentle, kind, and sweet. He treated Emily like a queen. "Yes mom, I'm sorry. I was just sitting down." "Where is Sheriff?" "He's just putting the dishes away. We just finished having dinner." "Emily! Exactly how lazy can you be?" Tears started welling in Emily's eyes. "I'm not being lazy mom. It's just with the baby and all I get tired easily now and Sheriff was so sweet and told me to rest while he did the dishes." "That's no excuse. You don't think your husband is tired after a long hard day at work? Honestly Emily I don't even know how you managed to land yourself a husband. Your lazy, your emotional, and now your getting fat. Have you been doing those exercises I sent you?" "I'm not getting fat mom it's the baby growing and the doctor said I shouldn't being doing a lot of activity, it's not good for the baby." "Oh so you think you know better then me?" "No mom that's not what..." "Whatever. I don't want to hear your excuses Emily. I'm coming for dinner tomorrow. I've already reserved my hotel suite. I expect dinner to be ready by six o'clock." Emily swallowed her tears back and said, "Yes m'am. Good night." "Goodbye."

The next day, after Sheriff went to work. Emily took his truck into town and went grocery shopping for dinner that night. After she purchased everything she needed she began heading out the door when she ran into Mrs. Goldfine. "Oh hello dear. My you seem to be growing by the minute. How far along are you?" "Four months." Emily said happily as she ran her hand over her baby bump." "I remember when I was pregnant with my firstborn. I was a nervous wreck. My Alan, god rest his soul. Ran all over the place trying to help me. So sweet and attentive. But...of course things change after being pregnant." Emily frowned and asked, "What do mean?" "Well dear...having a baby definitely changes things. Your figure for one. Men don't exactly find it attractive once you've gained the baby weight and after the baby comes out, they really don't want to see all of that. Plus the baby tends to take a lot of time so the attention tends to all fall on the baby. It's not just about you anymore." Emily's heart began to race. "You'll have to excuse me. I have to get home." Emily rushed out and towards the truck. Would Sheriff really not find her attractive anymore? Would the baby ruin their relationship? Between her mother and Mrs. Goldfine. Tears fell from her eyes and she allowed herself to cry before heading home.
