They sat underneath a big ole' oak tree by the river. Sheriff had packed a blanket and a picnic lunch for them to share. Emily sat with her legs underneath her, so that nothing underneath her dress showed, and Sheriff laid on his side, facing her and talking as he popped grapes in his mouth. He had taken her all around town and showed her everything. The school, the town hall, introduced her to a few people. The river was their last stop. "Are you excited to start work?" "Yes...I can't wait to meet all my students and get to know their little personalities." "When do you start?" "Summer ends next month. So probably in about two weeks just so I can get my classroom and everything set up." "Well if you need any help make sure you let me know. I'll scare those little ones straight." Emily giggled and took a sip of her water. Sheriff noticed her shiver and stood up as to slip off his jacket and put it around her. "Here you go. I don't want you getting sick." Emily smiled and scooted closer to him as he sat next to her. "Why are you so nice to me?" "What do you mean?" "Your so kind, sweet, gentle. You took me in when I had nowhere else to go.You don't even know me." "Well I would like too darlin'. There's just...something about you that's so....I don't know. And if you give me a chance. I'd like to be able to get to know you better and take you out on a date. If you like?" He said pushing a piece of hair behind her ear. Emily moved away slightly, turning her face away from him. "Who hurt you...Emily? Who hurt you darlin'? Made you feel like you couldn't trust anyone? Touched you?" Emily's eyes filled with tears and whispered, "I can't..." "Yes you can. You are a strong and beautiful woman. I'll protect you...please..."
Emily finally looked at him and said, "It started when I was 16. After my father died. My mother, Alyssa, became...different. She started forcing me into dating boys I didn't like. Forcing me into going to charity balls. When I wouldn't listen she would lock me in a room for days without food or water. She would only let me out when I promised that I would listen to her. Then it got worse. She managed what I ate, what I drank. Constantly asking me what I was doing where I was going. By the time I was 21. I was completely under her control. I even had to keep my degree in teaching a secret. She wanted me to just get a general studies degree. Said I didn't need really need one because I was going to be a stay at home mom. When she found out what I was really learning she flipped. Had one of her boy toys beat me and then she locked me away. I almost died from dehydration. Then all of a sudden she had the maids let me out and whisk me away to get prettied up. When I came downstairs she was having tea with a man. His name was Nathan Taranto. She looked at me and announced that Nathan and I were engaged and that if I didn't go along with the engagement that she would punish me. During social events Nathan was as nice as could be. People loved him. But in private...he...he..." "He beat and raped you didn't he?" Sheriff asked. Emily nodded and began to let the tears fall as she continued. "It hurt so bad every time. I told him I didn't want too but he said that my job was too look pretty and please him and only him. I tried to tell mother but she told me that I was a liar and no one would believe me. That Nathan would never hurt me."
By this time Sheriff had gathered Emily into his arms and held her tight. Kissing her forehead. "It hurt so bad. He would just do it...he forced me to...put it in my mouth and choke me. One time he was so rough I started bleeding. He didn't care that I was hurt. He got angry that I messed up the sheets and beat me." "Sshhh it's alright sweetheart. I will never let that man ever touch you again. I'll kill him before he hurts you." Emily cried in his arms until she was all tuckered out.
