It had been Bill's first day on the job when he met his wife, Sarah.
It was a push in robbery and the bastard had beat her before stealing her things.
She'd looked so scared and frightened, shivering as she sat on the back of the ambulance. Glaring at the paramedics, Bill had took one of the blankets and wrapped it around her tightly.
She was so beautiful, and her green soulful eyes pierced him so.
But while frightened she was brave and was able to give him a description of the man who had hurt her. Begging that Bill find her necklace.
It was a locket with a picture of her, her mother and father, and her brother. Her brother was a soldier and had been killed in action overseas. They were very close and he had given the necklace to her before he had shipped out. He was killed a month later.
Bill couldn't believe that someone would hurt such a sweet woman. And it made him angry.
When he had caught the burglar trying to pawn some of the items he had stolen. Bill pushed him up against the wall and forced him to tell where the necklace was.
That night he had taken it back to Sarah, her face lighting up when she saw it.
Over the next few months after that they dated. When neither of them was at work. They were with each other.
Bill was crazy about her. He craved her.
When he proposed she had immediately said yes and they celebrated by making love all night long.
The boys at the station gave him hell. Said that it wouldn't last.
They've been married for five years now and were still going strong. Just like they had been the day he kissed her for the first time.
So when he got the call saying she had been hurt and was in the hospital he and his partner booked it full lights and sirens to the hospital.
He ran as fast as he could to the ER where Captain Brass was in the room questioning her.
"Baby? Oh my god baby? What happened?" Bill asked as he immediately stationed himself by her bedside and took her hand in his. Stroking her hair.
"Officer Nolan. Your wife was in a very bad accident. A drunk driver ran a red light and hit her drivers side door."
"Billy I'm sorry. He just came out of nowhere." Sarah said crying, clinging to him.
"Hey it's ok baby. You did nothing wrong. As long as you're ok that's all that matters to me."
"But the car..."
"Sarah I don't care about the damn car. I care about you. You're all that matters to me."
Bill looked at Captain Brass while still holding Sarah.
"Is she gonna be ok? Where is the doctor?"
"Doctor said she's gonna be ok. But her left leg is broken, a couple of broken ribs, and a concussion."
All Bill saw was bruises covering his sweet wife's body and her tears.
"Officer Nolan. Can I speak to you outside for a minute?"
"No Billy. Please don't leave me!"
"I'm not going anywhere baby. I'm right here. Just let me talk to the Captain. I promise I'm not going anywhere." Bill kissed her hand and moved a couple feet away from her to talk.
"Officer, it's very important you stay away from this case, you understand?"
"Where is the bastard who hit her? I wanna see him." Bill snarled. Running his hand roughly across his five o clock shadow.
"You know I can't allow that."
"Captain please! That son of a bitch hit my wife. Not giving a damn bout anyone else but when he was gonna get his next drink. I want him to see my face. That way if he even thinks about taking another drink and getting behind the wheel. My ass is coming over there, and I'm gonna kill him."
"Which is exactly why you can't see him. Listen. Take some time off. Take care of your wife. Take care of her. Like you said, she is all that matters."
Bill slowed his breathing and looked over at Sarah. Looking at his feet as he said, "Fine. But Captain you better make sure to stick it to him."
Captain Brass put a hand on Bill's shoulder. "I'll take care of it."
Bill nodded and walked back over to Sarah. Lying down next to her in the hospital bed.
"It's going to be ok baby. I got you."
After a while Sarah drifted off to sleep as the sun was setting over Las Vegas.
Once she was out. Bill quietly left the room and walked down the hall.
His partner had told him that they were keeping the drunk driver in a room guarded by an officer. Apparently he had gotten hurt as well in the accident.
As he approached the door, the officer guarding the door just gave him a slight nod and moved out of the way so he could enter.
Bill quietly and quickly shut the door behind him. Glaring at the man who lay in the bed.
The man stirred awake and realized he was handcuffed to the bed.
He groaned and then chuckled before seeing Bill in the room.
"Oh man. Busted again. Must've really messed up this time. What I do? Hit another fire hydrant."
"You've been arrested for drunk driving before there Mr...."
"Holster. John Holster. And yes. I have. So what??? It's not that big a deal I've done it plenty of times."
The more the man talked the angrier Bill became.
This man could have killed Sarah because of his recklessness.
"Man I need a beer. Can you see if a cute nurse out there can bring me one?"
Bills face turned red, all he could see was red.
He lunged forward and wrapped his hand around the man's throat. Pinning him to the bed.
"If you have a death wish you son of a bitch then I will gladly give it to you. You almost killed my wife today because of your stupidity!"
The man's eyes bugged out and he struggled to breathe.
"She is the only thing I care about. And you..."
Bill pulled out his gun and put it Mr. Holsters mouth.
And suddenly it was as if Sarah was in the room with him. Bill could smell her. He could hear her.
"You're such a good man Billy. I love you so much."
Bill's eyes softened and he looked at the terrified man underneath him. He put his gun away and he looked him in the eyes.
"I want you to remember me. If I ever...ever find out you've been arrested again for drunk driving. You will see me again. If something happens to my girl. I'm coming back here and I will not hesitate to kill you. Do you understand me?" The man nodded and said, "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I thought it would be ok."
"You're going to jail. At least I know now, that she's safe from you."
With that. Bill went back to Sarah's room and slipped back into the hospital bed with her. Sliding his arms around her as best he could in the small bed.
Sarah stirred in her sleep and gently opened her eyes. Giving him a soft smile. "You ok Billy?"
Bill smiled and said, "Always with you baby. Always with you."
Sarah was released a few days later and Bill was more than happy to stay home with her and take care of her. After two weeks he went back to work and then a few months later. Sarah found out they were pregnant.
"A baby for my baby." He had said.
And they lived happily ever after 🥹
